The Minnesota Vikings are expected to explore several quarterback options this offseason, but two names continue to dominate the conversation: Kyler Murray and Geno Smith.
Both veterans are widely expected to be released by their current teams, which would allow Minnesota to sign them at a minimum salary of roughly $1.3 million while their previous teams still cover most of their contracts.
With the Vikings searching for stability at the position, the decision between Murray and Smith could become one of the most important moves of their offseason.
Why These Two Quarterbacks Are Leading the Conversation
Minnesota has been connected to several experienced quarterbacks in recent weeks.

The Case for Kyler Murray
Murray, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, remains one of the most talented quarterbacks potentially available.
At 27 years old, he is significantly younger than many veteran options and still possesses elite athleticism.
Known for his dual-threat ability, Murray can create explosive plays with both his arm and his legs.
However, there are concerns.
The former Pro Bowler has battled multiple injuries in recent seasons, and his playing style relies heavily on improvisation and mobility.
According to Dan Orlovsky, that approach might not align perfectly with the Vikings’ offensive philosophy.
“I like Kyler in Minnesota, I don’t love Kyler in Minnesota,” Orlovsky said during an appearance on NFL Live.
Murray himself has acknowledged that he wants to play a more dynamic role in the offense.
“I need the ball in my hands more,” Murray reportedly said. “I need to go be a playmaker and use my legs.”
That mindset may clash with how Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell prefers his offense to operate.
Why Geno Smith Might Be the Better Fit
Geno Smith represents the opposite style of quarterback.
Rather than relying on mobility, Smith is known for his traditional pocket-passing approach.
At five inches taller than Murray, he has the size advantage when it comes to reading the field and throwing over the middle.
Orlovsky believes that style might be better suited for Minnesota’s system.
“He wants his quarterback to be the point guard,” Orlovsky explained about O’Connell’s offense. “I just need you to be average, because everything else is going to be above average.”
In other words, the Vikings’ system is designed to distribute the ball efficiently rather than rely on individual playmaking.
Smith’s in-rhythm passing style could allow the offense itself to be the star.
The Experience Factor
Smith is coming off a disappointing season with the Raiders, but before that he enjoyed a career resurgence with the Seattle Seahawks, earning Pro Bowl recognition and leading a high-powered passing attack.
He has also proven to be durable and consistent over the past several seasons, something that could appeal to a Vikings team looking for stability.
Murray’s Upside Still Hard to Ignore
Despite the stylistic questions, Murray still offers something Smith cannot: long-term potential.
Seven years younger than Smith, Murray could theoretically become a multi-year solution if Minnesota successfully rebuilds his confidence and refines his decision-making.
His explosive ability could also elevate the offense in ways few quarterbacks can.
Vikings Could Pair a Veteran With J.J. McCarthy
Minnesota’s quarterback decision is further complicated by the presence of J.J. McCarthy, who remains part of the team’s long-term plans.
Adding Murray or Smith could create a veteran-young quarterback combination, allowing McCarthy to continue developing while the team remains competitive.
