Bears Linked to Marcus Mariota as Veteran Competition for Caleb Williams
The Chicago Bears appear to be exploring the quarterback market this offseason, and one intriguing name has surfaced: Marcus Mariota.
While there’s no doubt that Caleb Williams remains the franchise centerpiece, Chicago is reportedly considering adding a veteran quarterback who could provide competition and stability behind the young star.
And Mariota might be the perfect candidate.
Why Chicago Is Looking at Another Quarterback
Williams enjoyed a massive leap in his second NFL season.
The former No. 1 overall pick led the Bears to a 14–3 record and their first NFC North title since 2018 before the team fell to the Los Angeles Rams in overtime during the divisional playoffs.
Despite that success, Chicago’s quarterback depth remains uncertain.
Behind Williams, the Bears currently have:
- Tyson Bagent, who has started just four games in his career
- Case Keenum, a 38-year-old veteran who hasn’t played since 2023
Adding another quarterback could give Chicago a more reliable insurance option — especially with trade rumors surrounding Bagent.
Marcus Mariota Emerges as a Possible Target
According to reports, the Bears have taken interest in Marcus Mariota, a 12-year veteran and former Heisman Trophy winner.
Mariota entered the NFL as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 draft, but his career has evolved into that of a high-level backup who can step in when needed.
Recent analysis has even labeled him one of the most underrated free agents available this offseason.
Mariota’s Recent Performance
Mariota spent the last two seasons with the Washington Commanders, serving primarily as backup to quarterback Jayden Daniels.
However, injuries forced him into action more often than expected.
In 11 appearances (eight starts), Mariota recorded:
- 1,695 passing yards
- 10 touchdowns
- 7 interceptions
His passing efficiency improved during that stretch, with strong performance grades on nearly one-third of his throws.
The veteran also remains a capable dual-threat quarterback, something that could fit well in Chicago’s evolving offense.
An Affordable Veteran Option
Mariota is expected to command a market value of roughly $4 million per year, according to contract projections.
For a team like Chicago that is carefully balancing its salary cap, that price makes him an appealing option.
The Bears could add a respected veteran without committing major resources.
Mariota could serve several roles:

- Reliable backup if Williams misses time

The Bears Face Bigger Problems Up Front
While the quarterback situation is worth monitoring, Chicago’s biggest issue may actually be the offensive line.
The Bears were rocked earlier this week when Pro Bowl center Drew Dalman abruptly retired at just 27 years old.
Dalman played every offensive snap last season and was a major reason the Bears’ protection improved dramatically.
Thanks to the revamped offensive line:
- Williams was sacked just 24 times in 2025
- That number was down from 68 sacks during his rookie season
The Bears also produced the third-best rushing attack in the NFL, averaging 144.5 rushing yards per game.
Dalman’s retirement now leaves Chicago scrambling to find a replacement before the 2026 season.
Chicago’s Next Move
Whether the Bears ultimately sign Marcus Mariota remains uncertain.
But the idea reflects a growing trend across the NFL: teams pairing young franchise quarterbacks with experienced veterans who can help stabilize the position.
Chicago clearly believes it has found its future in Caleb Williams.
Now the front office just wants to make sure the present is protected.
And bringing in a former Heisman Trophy winner could be the next step.
