Despite falling to Team USA in the Olympic final, Marine Johannès shone brightly for France at the Paris Games, leaving fans wondering if she might follow in Gabby Williams’ footsteps and return to the WNBA. However, an American insider has now set the record straight.

While Johannès struggled with her shooting at times, preventing her from fully leading the French offense as hoped by her coach Jean-Aimé Toupane, her standout performances did not go unnoticed. A star NBA player in particular was captivated by her hot streak against Germany, signaling that her talent remains undeniable.

Following her Olympic heroics, many speculated that Johannès (MJ23) could pursue a WNBA comeback, much like Gabby Williams, who parlayed her strong tournament showing into a Seattle Storm contract. But according to insider Richard Cohen, any hope of seeing Johannès back in the WNBA this year is over:
“The absolute minimum they could’ve signed Sherrod for is $17,150, which would leave New York with a grand total of $33 in cap space. So any dreams you may still have harboured of seeing Marine Johannès in the WNBA in 2024 are now over, I’m afraid.”

With the New York Liberty having finalized their roster and exhausted their cap space, a 2024 return for Johannès is impossible. Fans will likely have to wait at least another year to see the talented guard of ÇBK Mersin back on North American courts.
As some fans have already pointed out, the Liberty’s recent moves make a return seem highly unlikely this summer:

For now, the French star’s WNBA journey is on pause, leaving fans to eagerly anticipate a potential 2025 return under the New York Liberty banner.
