St. Bonaventure is about to shake up college basketball in a way that could reverberate across Western New York.
The new hire isn’t just experienced—he’s legendary at every level he’s touched.
St. Bonaventure University is making a bold move that could redefine its men’s basketball program. Sources confirm that alumnus Mike MacDonald is set to become the 20th head coach in program history, stepping in after the retirement of Mark Schmidt.
MacDonald isn’t your typical hire. Over a 30-year career spanning Canisius College, Medaille College, and Daemen University, he compiled a staggering 522-312 record, becoming the only NCAA coach to win 100 games at the Division I, II, and III levels. That’s not just versatility—that’s dominance.
At Daemen, MacDonald transformed the Wildcats into a national powerhouse, posting a jaw-dropping 265-86 record over 12 seasons. The team went 61-3 across the last two campaigns, achieving a No. 1 national ranking in 2025 and reaching the NCAA quarterfinals as the No. 4 team in the country this year.
He turned Daemen into a machine, even without the advantages of fully funded scholarships—a testament to his eye for talent, player development, and in-game strategy.
The Bonnies administration, including NBA insider and longtime friend Adrian Wojnarowski, was particularly impressed by MacDonald’s ability to excel in the NCAA transfer portal era, maintaining an 81.3% win rate while building rosters from scratch. His expertise in offense, defense, player retention, and university-community connection made him a standout candidate.
MacDonald inherits a program that has seen sustained success under Schmidt, who retired after 19 years with a 339-254 record, making him the winningest coach in Bonnies history. Schmidt’s legacy included seven 20-win seasons and a program-best 26-8 finish in 2017-18, earning him conference Coach of the Year honors twice. Now, MacDonald faces the challenge—and the opportunity—of taking the Bonnies even further.
With a track record of turning every team he touches into a contender, MacDonald isn’t just a safe hire—he’s a transformational one. Western New York basketball fans should brace for impact, as St. Bonaventure gears up for a new era under a coach whose influence extends from high school gyms to national championships.
If history is any indication, the next few seasons could see the Bonnies competing at levels the program has never experienced before—and MacDonald is the perfect storm to make it happen.
