The New England Patriots made a financial move earlier this week that appeared to signal the end of an era.
Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs was officially released at the start of the new NFL league year, freeing up valuable salary cap space for the team’s 2026 roster plans.
But just days later, a surprising possibility has emerged.
According to reports from Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, Patriots executive vice president Eliot Wolf has not ruled out the idea of bringing Diggs back on a new deal.
In other words, the breakup may only be temporary.
Why the Patriots Released Diggs
New England’s decision to release Diggs wasn’t necessarily about performance.
Instead, it was primarily a salary cap move designed to create financial flexibility heading into the offseason.
The Patriots had several roster needs to address and needed additional cap space to pursue upgrades in free agency and potential trades.
Releasing Diggs provided immediate relief.
But it also left the door open for a creative reunion if both sides agree on a more team-friendly contract.
Diggs Still Produced at a High Level
Despite entering the later stages of his career, Diggs remained extremely productive in 2025.
The 32-year-old receiver actually led the Patriots in receiving last season with:
- 85 receptions
- 1,013 yards
- 4 touchdowns
That performance marked the seventh 1,000-yard season of Diggs’ career, a remarkable achievement across his 11 seasons in the NFL.
While he may no longer be at the peak of his prime, Diggs has proven he can still deliver reliable production.
And for a Patriots offense led by quarterback Drake Maye, that veteran presence could still be valuable.
Patriots Already Adding New Weapons
New England has not been standing still while exploring its options.
Earlier this week, the Patriots signed Romeo Doubs, formerly of the Green Bay Packers, to strengthen the receiving corps.
Doubs brings youth and explosiveness to the offense, potentially giving Maye another dynamic target in the passing game.
But the Patriots may still want a mix of experience and leadership in the receiver room.
That’s where Diggs could still fit.
If he returns, it would likely be in a smaller role, serving as a complementary option rather than the centerpiece of the offense.
A.J. Brown Still in the Trade Conversation
At the same time, New England continues exploring more aggressive options to upgrade the position.
The Patriots have reportedly been discussing a potential trade for Philadelphia Eagles star receiver A.J. Brown, one of the league’s most dominant wideouts.
However, acquiring Brown would likely require a massive package involving high draft picks and significant salary cap commitments.
Compared to that scenario, bringing Diggs back would be far cheaper and far simpler.
It would also allow the Patriots to preserve valuable draft assets.
A Reunion That Could Make Sense
While no agreement is currently in place, the possibility of a reunion remains very real.
Diggs already understands the system, has chemistry with teammates, and proved last season he can still contribute at a high level.
For the Patriots, that combination makes him an appealing fallback option if bigger trade plans fail to materialize.
For Diggs, returning to a familiar team—especially one with a rising young quarterback like Drake Maye—could offer the chance to remain competitive late in his career.
For now, the situation remains uncertain.
But one thing is clear:
The Patriots aren’t ready to close the door on Stefon Diggs just yet.
