A rising quarterback. A respected coach. And one big free-agent decision.
According to Romeo Doubs, Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel were impossible to ignore.

Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel Played Major Role in Patriots Landing Key Free Agent
The New England Patriots didn’t just sign a talented wide receiver this offseason—they landed a player who truly believes in what the organization is building.
New Patriots wideout Romeo Doubs made it clear that two major figures played a huge role in his decision to come to Foxborough: quarterback Drake Maye and head coach Mike Vrabel.
After officially signing his four-year deal, Doubs spoke about what convinced him that New England was the right place for the next chapter of his career.
And his answer centered around leadership—both on the field and in the locker room.
Drake Maye Already Making a Big Impression

Doubs didn’t take long to connect with his new quarterback.
In fact, the receiver revealed he has already spoken with Drake Maye, and the early impression left him excited about the partnership.
“He is an amazing person to be around,” Doubs said. “I love his personality.”
But Doubs also emphasized something that matters even more in the NFL: leadership.
“Obviously, his growth as a player on and off the field is really big. And I think just being able to lead the team—because ultimately, this game is team-based.”
For a wide receiver joining a new system, trust in the quarterback is crucial. Doubs believes Maye brings the qualities necessary to guide the Patriots forward.
Mike Vrabel’s Influence Was “Real Big”
While Maye helped sell the future of the offense, Mike Vrabel’s presence sealed the deal.
Doubs admitted the Patriots’ head coach played a major role in his choice to sign with New England instead of other teams—reportedly including the Washington Commanders.

“It was a great opportunity I felt like I couldn’t pass on,” Doubs said.
He pointed to the overall structure of the organization, saying the team’s leadership—from coaches to front office—stood out during the free-agency process.
Vrabel’s reputation as a strong leader and culture builder clearly resonated with the receiver.
Patriots Add Receiver Entering His Prime
At 25 years old, Doubs arrives in New England at the perfect stage of his career.
He is coming off a solid season with the Green Bay Packers where he recorded:
- 55 receptions
- 724 receiving yards
- 6 touchdowns
Across four NFL seasons, Doubs has totaled 202 catches, 2,424 yards and 21 touchdowns, with many of those scores coming in the red zone.
His ability to perform in big moments has also stood out. Both of his 100-yard career games came in the postseason, highlighting his potential as a clutch target.

Patriots Already Impressed by Doubs’ Work Ethic
Patriots executive Eliot Wolf revealed that Doubs wasted no time getting to work.
In fact, during his signing process, the receiver was already studying the playbook.
“He was already in the playbook,” Wolf said. “He was on his iPad learning the formations while I was trying to get him to sign his contract.”
Wolf described Doubs as a versatile receiver capable of playing multiple roles in the offense.
“He can play outside, inside, he blocks, he can play Z, he can play X,” Wolf explained. “He’s good on short routes, deep routes, and with the ball in his hands.”

Replacing Stefon Diggs… But in a Different Way
Doubs effectively steps into the Patriots’ receiver group after the team released Stefon Diggs earlier this week.
While Diggs led the team in receiving last season, the Patriots appear to be shifting toward a younger offensive core.
Doubs may not immediately replicate Diggs’ production, but his age and versatility give New England long-term upside.
And the receiver himself is taking a measured approach to his new opportunity.
“I just want to stay true to understanding where I am and coming into a new system,” Doubs said.
Rather than focusing on statistics or target totals, Doubs says his priority is simply learning the offense and contributing wherever he can.
A New Offensive Connection Begins
The Patriots are clearly betting that Drake Maye and Romeo Doubs can grow into one of the league’s more promising quarterback–receiver combinations.
With Vrabel shaping the culture and a young quarterback continuing to develop, New England is attempting to build a roster capable of competing again.
For Doubs, the vision was clear from the start.

A strong leader at quarterback.
A respected coach at the helm.
And a team that believes its best days are ahead.
That combination was enough to bring him to Foxborough.
