The Patriots’ biggest free-agent signing didn’t just choose New England for the contract.
Two key figures helped seal the deal — Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel.

Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel Helped Bring Romeo Doubs to the Patriots
FOXBORO — The New England Patriots’ newest wide receiver, Romeo Doubs, is already praising the two people who helped convince him to join the team: quarterback Drake Maye and head coach Mike Vrabel.
After officially signing his four-year contract with the Patriots, Doubs revealed that conversations with Maye and the leadership structure in New England played a major role in his decision.

“He is an amazing person to be around,” Doubs said of Maye. “I love his personality.”
For a young receiver entering the prime of his career, the opportunity to work with an emerging franchise quarterback was simply too good to pass up.
The Drake Maye Factor
Maye has quickly become one of the most influential figures in New England’s rebuild.
After an impressive season that helped lead the Patriots to Super Bowl LX, the young quarterback has developed a reputation around the league as both a rising star and a respected locker-room leader.
Doubs made it clear that Maye’s leadership and personality stood out immediately.
“His growth as a player on and off the field — that’s really big,” Doubs explained. “And being able to lead the team is important because ultimately this game is team-based.”

For a receiver joining a new system, having a quarterback he believes in was a major selling point.
Mike Vrabel’s Impact
While Maye’s presence mattered, Doubs also credited head coach Mike Vrabel as a key reason he chose New England.
Vrabel’s leadership and the organization’s overall structure helped convince the receiver that the Patriots were the right destination.
“It was a great opportunity I felt like I couldn’t pass on,” Doubs said.
He also praised the team’s environment and coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, saying he’s excited to work with a strong group on both sides of the ball.
Patriots Add a Receiver in His Prime

At 25 years old, Doubs arrives in New England entering the peak years of his career.
Last season with the Green Bay Packers, he recorded:
- 55 receptions
- 724 receiving yards
- 6 touchdowns
Across four NFL seasons, Doubs has totaled 202 catches for 2,424 yards and 21 touchdowns, with many of his scores coming in the red zone.
The Patriots believe his versatility will be a major asset.
According to executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf, Doubs can line up in multiple positions and contribute in several ways.

“He can play outside, inside… he can play Z, he can play X,” Wolf said. “He’s strong for the ball and has a lot of route variance that we liked.”
A Hard Worker Already Impressing the Team
Doubs also made an early impression on the Patriots’ front office.
Wolf revealed that even before signing his contract, the receiver was already studying the playbook.
“He was on his iPad learning the formations while I was trying to get him to sign his contract,” Wolf said.
That level of dedication quickly stood out to the team.
The Patriots’ New WR1
With Stefon Diggs recently released, Doubs now enters the season as the Patriots’ top wide receiver.
Despite that role, the veteran said he’s not focused on statistics or target numbers.
Instead, he wants to focus on learning the system and contributing however the team needs.
“I wouldn’t really specify that I’m gonna go in with this amount of targets,” Doubs said. “I just want to understand the system and do my job.”

For the Patriots, the move represents another step in building around Drake Maye — and Doubs appears ready to be a key part of that future.
