From draft-day doubts to confetti showers.
Sam Darnold and Mike Macdonald didn’t just win a Super Bowl — they rewrote their stories.

Sam Darnold Reveals the Grit That Bonds Him With Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald
When the confetti fell in Seattle, it wasn’t just a championship celebration — it was validation.
For quarterback Sam Darnold and head coach Mike Macdonald, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy wasn’t about overnight success. It was about survival. About proving people wrong. About enduring the years when nothing seemed to go right.

At a Super Bowl celebration event in Seattle earlier this month, Darnold opened up about what makes Macdonald special — and in doing so, revealed a powerful connection between the two.
“I think just like myself, he’s persevered through a lot,” Darnold said. “He’s coached at a lot of spots. He’s had some things that haven’t necessarily gone his way.”
That word — persevered — carries weight.
Macdonald’s rise wasn’t glamorous. He started as an assistant at Cedar Shoals High School in Georgia in 2008. From there, he grinded through college football at Georgia, climbed the ranks with the Baltimore Ravens, made a stop at Michigan, and returned to Baltimore before finally landing the Seahawks head coaching job in 2024.
Two seasons later?

Super Bowl champion.
“There’s not a lot of head coaches that get to call themselves Super Bowl champions,” Darnold said. “For him to be able to look in the mirror and say that to himself, I know he loves that.”
But here’s what stood out most: Darnold insists Macdonald isn’t celebrating for himself.
“He loves us being able to celebrate more than him being able to celebrate. He loves it for us more than for himself. He’s so unselfish.”
That humility, Darnold says, defines the culture in Seattle.
A Quarterback’s Redemption Arc
The parallel between coach and quarterback makes the story even more compelling.
Darnold was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft — expected to be a franchise savior. Instead, his early years were filled with instability, coaching changes, criticism, and doubt. Stops with multiple teams followed before he revived his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024.

Then came Seattle.
Signed before the 2025 season, Darnold didn’t just stabilize the Seahawks — he led them to a championship, becoming the first quarterback from the 2018 draft class to win a Super Bowl.
Ahead of Baker Mayfield.
Ahead of Josh Allen.
Ahead of Lamar Jackson.
Let that sink in.
The quarterback many had written off is now the one holding the ring.
Built on Setbacks, Fueled by Belief

Macdonald and Darnold didn’t take the fast lane to greatness. They took the long road — the one filled with detours, criticism, and second chances.
And that shared experience forged something rare: trust.
Macdonald built a culture centered on accountability and unselfish leadership. Darnold found a system that believed in him. Together, they turned resilience into results.
Seattle didn’t just win a title.
They built one on redemption.
And if Darnold’s words are any indication, this isn’t a one-year Cinderella story. It’s the foundation of something sustainable — a championship culture led by two men who understand exactly how hard it is to get there.
From overlooked to overachieving.
From doubted to decorated.

Sam Darnold and Mike Macdonald are proof that perseverance isn’t just a cliché — it’s a championship formula.
