He’s 16. He’s captaining the U21s. And Arsenal fans are already whispering one name: Saliba.
Marli Salmon may still be years away from the Emirates spotlight, but after his latest commanding performance for Arsenal’s under-21s, the hype train has officially left the station.

On Monday night at the Madejski Stadium, the teenage centre-back led the U21s to a 4-1 win over Reading in Premier League 2 — wearing the captain’s armband at just 16 years old.
Yes, 16.
That alone raised eyebrows. But it was the way he performed that truly set social media alight.
Composed. Dominant. Unfazed. Salmon completed the full 90 minutes as Arsenal secured their third straight win in matches he’s featured in. For many watching, it wasn’t just a good youth-team display.
It felt familiar.

Supporters immediately began drawing comparisons to William Saliba — and not in a casual way.
One fan described him as “a supreme talent” who “glides around the pitch” with the same calm assurance as the French international. Another boldly claimed Arsenal now have “William Saliba and two mini Salibas.”
That’s the level of excitement.
The comparisons aren’t just about physical attributes. It’s the aura. The composure under pressure. The ability to read danger early and make defending look effortless. Traits rarely seen in teenagers — and almost never at this level of maturity.

Mikel Arteta is reportedly a huge admirer of Salmon, and performances like this underline why.
Arsenal’s Hale End academy has produced stars before — Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe — but centre-backs with elite-level ceiling are rarer commodities. The idea that Salmon could one day step seamlessly into Saliba’s boots if circumstances ever demanded it is already gaining traction among supporters.
And it’s not just Salmon. With talents like Mosquera emerging alongside him, some fans are openly discussing a natural succession plan in case either Saliba or Gabriel were to depart in the future.

That’s how highly he’s rated.
Of course, caution is essential. Youth football is not the Premier League. The physical demands, tactical complexity, and mental intensity at senior level are a different universe.
But leadership at 16 cannot be taught. Calmness cannot be faked.
Salmon has time on his side — and perhaps the best possible mentors. Training alongside Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães gives him a blueprint few young defenders are lucky enough to access.

The road from Premier League 2 to Premier League title races is long.
But Arsenal fans are already dreaming.
Because sometimes, when a teenager plays with that much poise, you can’t help but wonder:
Are we watching the future?
