For Stefon Diggs, that script was interrupted.
Just days before Super Bowl LX, the New England Patriots’ star wide receiver was named in a new defamation lawsuit, adding another layer of legal uncertainty to a period already heavy with scrutiny.
According to reports from TMZ, the suit stems from a 2024 incident involving a reportedly stolen Ferrari and alleged physical altercations connected to members of Diggs’ inner circle.
Diggs has not publicly responded to the latest lawsuit as he prepares to play in the biggest game of his career on Sunday. The Patriots and Diggs’ representatives have been contacted for comment.
What makes the timing especially jarring is that this filing arrives weeks after Diggs was accused in a separate case of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery related to an alleged incident involving his personal chef.
Through the Patriots, Diggs has categorically denied those allegations.
“It’s been an emotional time,” Diggs said previously, according to MassLive’s Mark Daniels. “It’s definitely an open case so I can’t even say anything about it.”
According to an incident report cited by the Daily Mail, the accuser alleged that Diggs entered her unlocked bedroom, grabbed her from behind, and attempted to choke her using his elbow. She told police she feared she “could have blacked out” before being thrown onto a bed. The report notes the accuser initially hesitated to identify Diggs due to his fame.
Those claims remain allegations and have not been adjudicated.
Still, the accumulation of legal headlines has shifted the tone around Diggs at the worst possible moment. What should have been a week focused on football now exists in two parallel realities: preparation for a championship game and the mounting pressure of unresolved legal matters.
On the field, Diggs has been central to New England’s improbable Super Bowl run. After a dominant season as the Patriots’ primary receiving threat, he enters Sunday positioned as one of the game’s defining figures — a player capable of tilting the outcome with a single route.
Off the field, the noise is growing louder.
The new defamation suit reportedly centers on reputational harm tied to prior accusations connected to the 2024 incident. While details remain limited, the legal action adds complexity to an already delicate situation, especially with multiple cases unfolding in public view.
Diggs’ personal life has also remained under a spotlight. He welcomed a child with girlfriend Cardi B last year, a milestone that unfolded amid the controversies now trailing him.
