The Chicago Bears almost pulled the trigger on Maxx Crosby…
But a shocking medical leak may have just saved them from a massive mistake.

The Trade That Never Happened — And Why It Matters Now
For weeks, the Chicago Bears were heavily linked to one of the NFL’s most feared defensive stars: Maxx Crosby.
The plan was bold — bring in an elite pass rusher, reshape the defense, and signal a new era under head coach Ben Johnson.
But the deal never happened.
At the time, it felt like a missed opportunity.
Now? It might look like a lucky escape.
Because just days after the failed trade talks, a stunning medical revelation surfaced — and it’s changing how teams view Crosby entirely.
A Medical Leak Raises Serious Concerns
On March 16, a doctor’s analysis based on leaked medical information painted a far more troubling picture of Crosby’s health than previously known.
According to the report, Crosby isn’t just dealing with a routine knee issue.

He reportedly has:
- A significant meniscus tear
- Stress injury to the bone
- Damage to the articular cartilage
That last detail is the real red flag.
Medical expert Dr. Jimmy Liao explained that cartilage damage is far more concerning than a standard meniscus injury — both in the short term and long term.
“If the cartilage damage was newly discovered during the physical,” Liao noted, “it could absolutely explain why the Ravens canceled the trade.”
And that’s exactly what happened.
Ravens Walk Away — And Send a Message to the League
In one of the most dramatic twists of the offseason, the Baltimore Ravens initially agreed to acquire Crosby.
Then came the physical.
Then came the reversal.
Instead of finalizing the deal, Baltimore backed out — choosing to sign Trey Hendrickson instead.
That decision now looks far less surprising.
Because in the NFL, teams don’t walk away from elite talent unless something is seriously wrong.
And this situation may have been just that.

Crosby’s Production vs. His Price Tag
Let’s be clear — Maxx Crosby is still one of the most dominant defensive ends in the league.
His 2025–26 season proves it:
- 73 total tackles
- 10 sacks
- 28 tackles for loss
- 1 interception
Those are elite numbers by any standard.
But the real question now isn’t about talent.
It’s about risk.

Is a player with potential long-term knee damage still worth two first-round picks and a massive contract?
For many teams, that answer is quickly shifting to “no.”
Why the Bears Might Be Relieved
The Bears were reportedly in serious contention to land Crosby.

Had the deal gone through, they could have sacrificed premium draft capital — possibly two first-round picks — for a player now surrounded by medical uncertainty.
That’s not just a gamble.
That’s a franchise-defining risk.
Instead, Chicago walked away empty-handed.
And in hindsight, that “failure” may turn out to be one of their smartest non-moves in years.
Trade Value in Freefall?
The fallout from this leak could have major consequences.
According to Dr. Liao, cartilage damage makes it significantly harder for the Raiders to:
- Find trade partners
- Demand high draft compensation
- Justify a large contract
In other words, Crosby’s market value may already be dropping.
Which could explain why Las Vegas is suddenly less aggressive about moving him.
The Story Isn’t Over Yet
Despite everything, a trade is still on the table.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the Raiders remain open to offers — especially as the NFL Draft approaches or closer to the season.
“Everybody seems like they’re in a good spot,” Fowler said, “but they’re still open to the possibility if the right offer comes.”
That means this situation could heat up again at any moment.

And if it does?
The Bears — or any interested team — may get a second chance.
But this time, at a much lower price… and a much higher risk.
