Barcelona just said the quiet part out loud.
If Erling Haaland ever becomes available… they’re ready.
Yes — despite years of financial turmoil, wage restrictions, and transfer caution, Barcelona are publicly insisting they have the firepower to launch a blockbuster move for Manchester City’s goal machine.
And they’re not whispering about it either.

Senior board member Joan Soler has boldly claimed that the Catalan giants could afford Haaland — or even his former City teammate Julian Alvarez — if either became available.
“Signings like Haaland or Julian Alvarez pay for themselves in five years,” Soler declared. “Barca’s finances are ready for something like this.”
That’s not speculation. That’s intent.
Haaland, 25, remains one of the most devastating forwards in world football. Since joining Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, he has torn through the Premier League, winning the Golden Boot in each of his first two seasons — and he’s on track to do it again with 22 league goals already this campaign.

His interest in playing in Spain one day has long been an open secret.
But here’s the complication: Haaland signed a new ten-year deal with City in early 2025. A contract designed not just to secure his prime — but to shut down exactly this kind of speculation.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are still operating under strict financial controls. Soler admitted the club cannot break its wage structure to land a superstar.
“We have set ourselves a limit and we are not going to exceed it,” he insisted. “We have to sign players at market prices, keeping our salary scales in mind.”
And that’s where the dream could collide with reality.

Because convincing Haaland to accept a carefully structured wage — potentially below what he earns at City — may prove impossible.
Which is why Barcelona are already preparing a Plan B.
If Haaland remains untouchable, Barca could turn their attention to another Manchester City forward: Omar Marmoush.
The 27-year-old Egyptian international, who joined City from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £64 million deal, is reportedly on Barcelona’s radar. Diario Sport claim that boss Hansi Flick views Marmoush as a dynamic attacking option who would fit seamlessly into his system.

Unlike Haaland, Marmoush’s situation is more fluid.
He has struggled to secure consistent starts at the Etihad this season, and there were suggestions he was open to leaving before the winter transfer window closed. Reports indicate Pep Guardiola could be willing to sell him for less than the original transfer fee — a scenario that would make Barcelona’s financial balancing act far easier.
In many ways, this could become a fascinating chess match.
Barcelona publicly signal ambition with Haaland — sending a message to fans and rivals that they are ready to compete at the very top again.

Privately, they monitor Marmoush — a more attainable target who could deliver impact without breaking their economic model.
Meanwhile, Manchester City sit in a position of strength.
Haaland is tied down long-term. Marmoush remains under contract. Guardiola holds the cards.
But in modern football, contracts rarely silence speculation.
If Barcelona’s finances truly are stabilizing, and if Haaland’s long-term dream includes LaLiga, this story may not fade quietly.
For now, it remains a bold declaration of intent from Catalonia.
But if the door ever cracks open — even slightly — expect Barcelona to sprint through it.
Because when a club says it’s ready to sign Erling Haaland… the football world listens.
