Just weeks after delivering one of the most memorable performances in Super Bowl history, Kenneth Walker III may already be heading toward the most shocking twist of the NFL offseason.

Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III Suddenly Headed Toward Free Agency as Seahawks Hesitate on Franchise Tag
In the NFL, success usually guarantees security. But for Kenneth Walker III, the aftermath of a championship season may be unfolding in a way few expected.
Despite leading the Seattle Seahawks to victory in Super Bowl LX and earning Super Bowl MVP honors, Walker is now reportedly heading toward free agency, as the team is not expected to place the franchise tag on the star running back before the league’s deadline.

According to reports from ESPN, the Seahawks are unlikely to use the tag before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET cutoff, a decision that could open the door for one of the league’s most electrifying offensive players to test the open market for the first time in his career.
If Seattle and Walker fail to agree on a new contract before March 11, when free agency officially begins, the 25-year-old could instantly become one of the most sought-after players in the entire NFL.
And the timing couldn’t be more dramatic.
Walker is coming off the best season of his career, capped by a historic Super Bowl performance that put his name alongside some of the league’s most memorable postseason heroes.

In Seattle’s championship showdown against the New England Patriots, Walker delivered a dominant performance in a game defined by defense. He racked up 161 all-purpose yards, including 135 rushing yards on 26 carries, repeatedly breaking through New England’s defense when the Seahawks needed him most.
The effort earned him Super Bowl MVP, making him the first running back in 28 years to receive the award.
For most players, that kind of moment would cement their future with the franchise.

Instead, Walker now finds himself at the center of one of the NFL’s most intriguing offseason storylines.
If Seattle does not reach an agreement with him, Walker would join a very exclusive group of players—becoming only the fourth reigning Super Bowl MVP in history to enter free agency.
The previous three players to experience that rare situation—Larry Brown, Dexter Jackson, and Desmond Howard—all ultimately signed with new teams after hitting the market.
Now the same possibility looms for Walker.
The legal tampering period, which allows teams to begin negotiating with pending free agents, starts on March 9, meaning interested franchises could soon begin lining up to pursue the explosive running back.
And there may be no shortage of suitors.

Two teams already stand out as potential landing spots.
The Kansas City Chiefs could be searching for help in their backfield, as both Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt are scheduled to become free agents. Walker’s explosive running style could fit perfectly in Andy Reid’s offense alongside Patrick Mahomes.
Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars could also enter the conversation. Their current starter, Travis Etienne, is playing on the final year of his rookie contract, potentially leaving Jacksonville open to reshaping its running game.
While speculation grows around the league, the Seahawks still have time to keep their star.
Seattle could reach a long-term deal with Walker before free agency begins. If not, the franchise may be forced to pivot toward other options, either through free agency or the 2026 NFL Draft.
The team does have one promising back already under contract: Zach Charbonnet, a 2023 second-round pick who led Seattle with 12 rushing touchdowns last season.
However, Charbonnet missed the Seahawks’ final two playoff games due to injury, raising questions about whether he can fully carry the backfield workload if Walker departs.
For now, Seattle faces a difficult decision.
Letting a Super Bowl MVP walk away would be a stunning move for any franchise—especially one still chasing championship momentum.
But in today’s NFL, business decisions often move faster than sentiment.
As the countdown to free agency begins, Kenneth Walker III’s future remains one of the biggest mysteries of the offseason.

And if Seattle truly lets him reach the open market, the race to sign him could become one of the league’s most explosive bidding wars.
