Owen Miller, a name the Milwaukee Brewers once placed high hopes on, is now seeking a new opportunity in a completely different team: the Chicago Cubs.

After two seasons with the Brewers, where he had impressive moments, particularly under former coach Craig Counsell, Miller will now continue his career in the city across the river. He has signed a minor league contract with the Cubs, a decision that may not immediately shake MLB, but opens a promising new chapter for a versatile player.

Miller, a son of Wisconsin, has had a professional career full of ups and downs. Since being selected by the San Diego Padres in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft, he has been constantly on the move. Despite interesting moves, from the Cleveland Guardians to Milwaukee, then the Colorado Rockies, he has always demonstrated his versatility with the ability to play multiple positions, from infield to outfield. This makes him a very valuable player for any team looking for versatility.

The 2023 season with the Brewers was one of the most memorable of Miller’s career. He started the season strongly, being selected as a starter thanks to his excellent form in Spring Training. He demonstrated his versatility playing in multiple positions, from first base, second base, third base to left field and right field. In addition, Miller had an impressive offensive run, maintaining a .331 batting average in early June. However, the inevitable happened: a major slump in July, when he only averaged .178 batting and subsequently had to return to the minor leagues.

Even so, Craig Counsell helped him bring out his best qualities that season. But when Pat Murphy replaced Counsell in 2024, Miller’s chances in the Brewers’ starting lineup diminished. He was traded to the Colorado Rockies and then endured a forgettable season with only 9 games played in 2025.
However, Miller’s story isn’t over yet.
By signing a minor league contract with the Cubs, Owen Miller has the opportunity to revive his career. This contract doesn’t guarantee an immediate starting spot, but with the support of Craig Counsell, who witnessed his abilities in Milwaukee, Miller could have a great chance to rebuild his career.

Miller’s versatility, combined with his consistent offensive performance in the past, makes him a potential asset for the Cubs. If Miller can return to the form he showed in the 2023 season, this could be a worthwhile trade for the Chicago team. With many former Brewers players reuniting with Counsell at the Cubs, Miller could be a name that creates unexpected upsets.

With all these factors in mind, Owen Miller’s strong return to the Cubs, in an environment familiar to Counsell, could very well be the most noteworthy story of the coming seasons.
