The Patriots lost their No. 1 receiver overnight.
Now the race is on to find Drake Maye a new weapon before the season slips away.

Patriots Scramble for New WR1 as Top Free-Agent Targets Disappear
The New England Patriots entered the 2026 offseason with one glaring priority: fix the wide receiver room.
But after the surprising release of Stefon Diggs, the market for top receivers quickly started drying up. Several of the biggest names linked to New England vanished almost immediately once the NFL’s legal tampering window opened.

Alec Pierce re-signed with the Indianapolis Colts.
Mike Evans reportedly joined the San Francisco 49ers.
And Michael Pittman Jr. was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
With those elite options off the board, the Patriots are now forced to look elsewhere to replace Diggs’ production and continue building around rising quarterback Drake Maye.
Despite the shrinking market, a few intriguing options remain.
Romeo Doubs Could Break Out in a Bigger Role

One potential target is Romeo Doubs, who has spent the past four seasons with the Green Bay Packers.
While Doubs has shown flashes of big-play ability, he has rarely been featured as the primary target in Green Bay’s offense. The Packers’ deep receiver rotation—including Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Bo Melton, and Matthew Golden—often spread opportunities across multiple players.
Add in the Packers’ run-heavy offensive philosophy, and Doubs has never truly been given the chance to operate as a true No. 1 option.
That could change in New England.
With more consistent targets, Doubs has the potential to evolve into a much larger offensive weapon.
Brian Thomas Jr. Trade Could Be Sneaky Option
Another intriguing possibility involves Brian Thomas Jr. of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Reports indicate that Jacksonville is listening to trade offers for the young receiver, who still has two years remaining on his rookie contract plus a fifth-year option.

Thomas burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2024, recording 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns while earning a Pro Bowl selection.
However, his second season saw a decline in production after the Jaguars underwent coaching changes. In 2025, he finished with 707 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
For a rebuilding Patriots offense, Thomas could represent a high-upside gamble. At just a few seasons into his career, he still has plenty of room to develop—and his contract would remain relatively affordable.
A.J. Brown Remains the Dream Target

If New England truly wants a proven superstar, the biggest name still connected to the team is A.J. Brown.
The Patriots have been linked to Brown in rumors for weeks, and his history with head coach Mike Vrabel has fueled speculation that a reunion could happen.
Brown is one of the league’s most dominant receivers. Over seven seasons, he has:
- Recorded 1,000+ receiving yards in six seasons
- Earned three Pro Bowl selections
- Been named Second-Team All-Pro three times
But acquiring him would come at a steep cost.
Brown carries a $23 million cap hit next season, and the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly demanding significant draft capital in any trade discussions.
Still, if the Patriots want a legitimate No. 1 receiver to pair with Drake Maye, Brown remains the most obvious solution.
Patriots Facing Critical Decision

New England’s offense made major strides last season thanks to Maye’s development and Diggs’ veteran leadership.
Now, with Diggs gone, the Patriots must decide how aggressive they’re willing to be in rebuilding their receiving corps.
Do they gamble on upside with someone like Doubs or Thomas?
Or do they swing big for a proven star like A.J. Brown?
The answer could shape the Patriots’ offense—and Drake Maye’s future—for years to come.
