One roster move just gave the New England Patriots a major financial boost — and it could completely reshape their offseason strategy.

Because releasing Stefon Diggs didn’t just clear a spot on the roster… it unlocked millions in spending power.
Patriots Free Up Major Cap Space After Stefon Diggs Release
The New England Patriots made a surprising roster decision this week when they released veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and the move has already had a massive impact on the team’s financial flexibility.
According to MassLive’s Mark Daniels, the decision immediately opened $15.795 million in additional salary cap space for the Patriots heading into free agency.
Once the move was processed under the NFL’s top-51 salary cap rule, New England’s total available cap space jumped to roughly $55 million.

That figure now ranks seventh-most in the entire NFL, giving the Patriots significant financial muscle as the free agency period approaches.
And with the legal tampering window opening soon, the timing of the move appears far from accidental.
A Strategic Move Before Free Agency
By releasing Diggs now, the Patriots have dramatically increased their ability to pursue high-profile players on the open market.
Several major names have already been linked to New England, including:
- Cincinnati Bengals pass rusher Trey Hendrickson
- Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce
In addition, trade rumors continue to swirl around Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver A.J. Brown, another player the Patriots have reportedly shown interest in acquiring.
The added cap space could make it much easier for New England to pursue one or more of those high-impact additions.
Diggs’ Impact in New England

Despite his release, Diggs played an important role in New England’s offense last season.
The veteran receiver helped spark a dramatic turnaround in the Patriots’ passing game.
In 2024, the team ranked last in the NFL in passing yards with 3,343 yards.
But after adding Diggs, the offense surged to fourth in the league in 2025 with 4,459 passing yards.
Diggs himself delivered another productive campaign, recording 1,013 receiving yards, marking the seventh 1,000-yard season of his career.
His presence helped the Patriots make a deep playoff run that ultimately ended with a Super Bowl appearance in early 2026.

A Season of Mixed Production
While Diggs reached the 1,000-yard milestone again, his performances were inconsistent throughout the year.
The 32-year-old receiver had fewer than 50 receiving yards in 10 of the 17 games he played.
Eight of those performances produced less than 40 yards, and his postseason production was relatively quiet as well.
Across four playoff games, Diggs totaled 110 receiving yards, a modest output for a player who had once been one of the league’s most dominant wide receivers.
Those factors likely contributed to the Patriots’ decision to move on.
More Moves Could Still Be Coming

Even with nearly $55 million in cap space, the Patriots may not be finished creating financial flexibility.
The front office still has the option to restructure contracts or release additional players, which could generate even more room to maneuver in free agency.
That possibility makes New England one of the more intriguing teams to watch as the offseason unfolds.
A Busy Offseason Ahead
With free agency set to begin March 11, the Patriots now have both the cap space and the motivation to aggressively upgrade their roster.
The release of Stefon Diggs may mark the end of a short but impactful chapter in New England.
But it could also signal the beginning of a much bigger offseason transformation.

And with millions now available to spend, the Patriots suddenly have the financial firepower to make it happen.
