Prince Harry’s comments about the president during a surprise appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert sparked boos from the audience.
The Duke of Sussex, 41, took part in a comedy sketch with the TV host and comedian, 61, during which he described Donald Trump as “a king” in an apparent reference to the No Kings demonstrations during which millions of Americans have expressed their disapproval of the Republican politician. In the sketch, Harry played himself as he auditioned to become a Hallmark movie “Christmas prince.”

As he entered the studio, the prince told Stephen he had become lost while searching for an audition for the “Gingerbread Christmas Prince saves Christmas in Nebraska.” The comedian then asked Harry why a real prince would want to star in such films, to which he replied, “You Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies, and you’re clearly obsessed with royalty, so why not?”

Stephen, however, pushed back on the idea of “obsession” with royals, to which Harry responded, “Really? I hear you elected a king.” At that point, the audience started booing, in what appeared to be a sign of disapproval towards Trump.
Harry also complained to Stephen about Americans electing Trump “after making such a big deal about my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather, George III.” The former British monarch, whose reign lasted almost 60 years, from 1760 until his death in 1820, was on the throne when Britain lost its 13 North American colonies and is often portrayed as a tyrant in American historical narratives.
‌
“Well, he was kind of a jerk,” Stephen told Harry, before the prince referenced CBS’ recent settlement with Trump and joked that he would “do anything” to get the part. He added, “I’ll record a self-tape, I’ll fly myself to an audition, settle a baseless lawsuit with the White House – all the things you people in TV do.”
“Hey, I didn’t do any of those things,” Stephen said, to which Harry replied, “Maybe that’s why you’re canceled.” After some reports claimed that the boos were directed at Harry, many social media users said they were actually for Trump.
“Wow, getting booed on the Colbert show, Harry, the entitled twit, is finding out that the US hates him just as much as his own country does,” a critic wrote. But another pointed out, “He wasn’t booed. The audience was booing Trump, as Harry referenced him.”
‌
Someone else said, “They were booing at trumpf, who was part of the (creative) joke that he said.” In another sketch, Harry recreated an iconic moment from The Great British Bake Off, involving British TV presenter Alison Hammond. Harry and Stephen appeared in the clip, as they lip-synced to a moment from the Channel 4 show in which the TV host misunderstood a contestant and thought he said “beg” instead of bake.
After the clip was shared on social media, many fans loved it and one said, “This is probably the best thing an English royal has done since like Henry VII.” Another said, “Just read Prince Harry’s book ‘Spare’. It’s an excellent book that explains so much, and makes the reader love Harry and Megan. I’m so happy that they found each other!”
Wednesday’s visit was the duke’s second Late Show appearance, having last appeared in January 2023 to promote his memoir Spare. Harry’s first appearance on the show set a two-year viewership record and made international headlines.
