The Los Angeles Sparks are facing widespread criticism from WNBA fans this Tuesday after a promotional post ahead of their game against the Seattle Storm drew backlash for its content.

The Sparks’ social media team shared a photo of rookie Sarah Ashlee Barker with the caption, “Back in front of the home crowd.” While the message itself was harmless, the image selection raised eyebrows: Barker was pictured in a revealing black top, rather than in her Sparks uniform.

Fans were quick to voice their disappointment and frustration. “Y’all need to have more control over these organizations. I take my daughters to these games and we on here promoting the games with women half naked? This is embarrassing,” one user wrote.
Other fans echoed the sentiment, questioning the intent behind the graphic. “As a woman I’m disappointed by the graphic ..but each their own…don’t at me,” commented another. “The Sparks really want men to watch them, lol. It’s getting embarrassing,” a third user added.

Critics also called out the sexualization of players for marketing purposes. “Sexualizing your players to market for the male gaze is actually insane,” one fan remarked.

Barker, who played college basketball at Alabama, is averaging 4.6 points per game this season as the Sparks attempt to improve their record to 5-8 in Wednesday night’s matchup against Seattle. Tipoff is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET on NBA TV.

The incident raises broader questions about how women’s sports are promoted and whether organizations are prioritizing spectacle over athletic achievement.
