While the NFL world dines at St. Elmoâs, the Chiefs are preparing for something far more important than steak.
Trent McDuffieâs future in Kansas City will start taking shape Wednesday morning.

Trent McDuffieâs Reps, Brett Veach Set for Crucial Combine Meeting
Indianapolis during Combine week is full of scouts, executives, coaches â and agents.
Lots of agents.
And this week, no agents may matter more to the Kansas City Chiefs than those representing All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach confirmed Tuesday that extension talks are set to resume immediately.
âWe had a lot of dialogue with Trent last spring, last summer,â Veach said. âHeâs first out of the gate tomorrow. Looking forward to getting with them. Obviously, Trentâs a great player⊠weâd love to have Trent back for the long term.â

That meeting could determine whether McDuffie remains a cornerstone â or becomes one of the biggest trade stories of the offseason.
The Market Has Shifted
McDuffie was the third cornerback selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, taken 21st overall behind Derek Stingley Jr. and Sauce Gardner.
Since then, the financial landscape has exploded.

- Derek Stingley Jr. signed a three-year, $90 million extension.
- Sauce Gardner signed a four-year, $120.4 million deal.
- Gardner was later traded to Indianapolis for two future first-round picks plus wide receiver Adonai Mitchell.
Those deals now define the market.
If Veach and McDuffieâs camp agree on value, the Stingley and Gardner contracts will serve as the blueprint.
If they donât?
The Gardner trade becomes the starting point.
Extension or Ransom?
Kansas City may not command two first-round picks for McDuffie. But if trade talks begin, the return would be significant.

The Chiefs currently hold just six picks in Aprilâs draft, pending a possible compensatory selection if safety Justin Reid departs in free agency.
Additional premium draft capital could help reshape the roster.
But losing McDuffie would leave a massive void in Steve Spagnuoloâs defense.
Heâs versatile. Physical. Technically sound. Battle-tested against elite receivers â including his standout one-on-one performance against JaâMarr Chase.
Elite corners donât come cheap.
And they donât grow on trees.
The Fifth-Year Option Is Only a Temporary Fix
For now, McDuffie is set to play under his fully guaranteed fifth-year option, which Kansas City exercised prior to the 2024 season.

But thatâs not a long-term solution.
If no extension or trade materializes, the Chiefs face two eventual paths:
- Use the franchise tag next offseason
- Let him hit free agency
Neither option is ideal for a franchise that has carefully maintained roster stability during the Patrick Mahomes era.
Cap Reality Looms
The biggest obstacle may not be desire â it may be flexibility.
Kansas Cityâs salary cap situation is tight. Any extension of this magnitude would require creative restructuring or additional roster moves.
If the Chiefs canât create the necessary room, negotiations could stall quickly.
And when negotiations stall in todayâs NFL, trade rumors accelerate.
A Defining Moment for the Chiefs
This isnât just about one player.
Itâs about direction.

Extending McDuffie signals Kansas City is doubling down on its defensive core for the next championship window.
Trading him would represent a calculated reset â adding draft capital while accepting short-term risk.
Either way, Wednesdayâs meeting in Indianapolis carries enormous weight.
The sleeves are rolled up.
Now weâll see which way this franchise pivots.
