The Texans made the first move.
The running back market shifted.
And the Seahawks might be the quiet winners.

Seahawks Could Benefit From Texans–Lions Trade
Houston’s acquisition of David Montgomery from Detroit didn’t just shake up two backfields.
It may have reshaped the free-agent market — especially for Kenneth Walker III.
With the Seahawks’ Super Bowl MVP set to hit free agency, one of his projected suitors may have just backed out of the race.

That’s big.
One Suitor Off the Board?
Before the Montgomery trade, ESPN’s Dan Graziano listed the Texans among teams expected to explore the running back market — alongside the Chiefs and Giants.
Now?
Houston pairing Montgomery with second-year back Woody Marks makes a major free-agent splash unlikely.
That potentially removes one aggressive bidder for Walker.
And in free agency, fewer bidders usually means better leverage for the incumbent team.
Why This Matters for Seattle
Walker isn’t just another free agent.

He’s:
- A Pro Bowl-level talent
- The Seahawks’ offensive engine
- The reigning Super Bowl MVP
If Seattle wants to repeat, keeping Walker in the Pacific Northwest is a priority.
And if Houston — a team with cap space and playoff ambitions — is no longer in the mix, that strengthens Seattle’s position.
Who’s Still a Threat?
There are still potential suitors.
Chiefs
Kansas City could upgrade from Isiah Pacheco. But:
- They hold the No. 9 overall draft pick.
- They’ve been linked to RB prospect Jeremiyah Love.
- A rookie contract would be far cheaper than Walker.
Giants

New York has Cam Skattebo entering Year 2. They could add competition, but running back isn’t their most urgent need.
Other teams may emerge, but as of now, the field doesn’t look overwhelming.
Seattle Holds the Edge
The Seahawks:
- Have over $60 million in cap space.
- Have continuity and familiarity.
- Can offer a featured role on a championship roster.
If bidding doesn’t escalate dramatically, Seattle should be considered the favorite to retain Walker.

And Montgomery landing in Houston may have quietly reduced competition.
The Bigger Picture
The legal tampering period begins next Monday at 9 a.m. PT.
Deals will move quickly.
But thanks to the Texans–Lions trade, one of the early dominoes may have fallen in Seattle’s favor.
Sometimes winning free agency isn’t about signing someone new.
Sometimes it’s about keeping what you already have.

And after this trade, the Seahawks might be in prime position to do just that.
