The Chiefs just created cap space.
Now they may need all of it — and then some.
Kansas City’s next financial decision could cost $30 million per year.

Chiefs Receive $30M Trent McDuffie Update After Andy Reid’s Latest Move
The Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason juggling act isn’t over.
After making difficult cuts to manage their salary cap, the franchise now faces a major decision regarding All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie — and it won’t come cheap.
According to reporting cited from The Athletic, McDuffie’s next contract could approach $30 million per year, reflecting the exploding cornerback market and his elite production.
And that’s a serious number for a team already navigating financial strain.

Why McDuffie’s Price Is So High
Since being drafted in 2022, McDuffie has become one of the NFL’s most complete defensive backs:
- 56 games played
- 178 solo tackles
- 5.5 sacks
- 34 pass deflections
- 8 forced fumbles
He’s been a tone-setter in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense and a core piece of Kansas City’s championship window.
But here’s the complication:
- He has just one year left on his rookie deal.
- After that, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
- The cornerback market has skyrocketed.
If the Chiefs wait, the price likely rises.

If they extend him now, they must create major cap flexibility.
The Agency Factor
There’s another wrinkle.
McDuffie is represented by CAA, the same agency that helped Trey Smith secure a record-breaking $94 million deal over four years.
That signals one thing:
Negotiations won’t be soft.
CAA knows the market — and they know McDuffie’s value.
Chiefs Already Made a Major Cut
To create breathing room, Kansas City recently released starting offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor.
Taylor carried a $27.4 million cap hit, and his release reportedly saves roughly $20 million.

However:
- The Chiefs were previously facing a $57 million cap deficit.
- Even after the move, they remain about $8.5 million over the cap.
That means more restructuring or cuts could be coming.
Taylor, despite starting 45 regular-season games for Kansas City, struggled with penalties — recording 49 (41 accepted), the most among NFL offensive linemen during that span.

Still, losing a starting tackle creates new roster challenges.
What Are the Chiefs’ Options?
Kansas City has three realistic paths:
1️⃣ Extend McDuffie Now
Lock him up before free agency drives the price higher.
2️⃣ Let Him Play Out the Final Year
Risk losing him — or paying even more later.
3️⃣ Trade Him
If the cap crunch becomes too tight, this offseason would be the ideal window.
Given his production, a trade would generate massive interest — but it would also weaken a championship-level defense.
The Bigger Picture
For the first time since 2017 — when Kansas City traded up to draft Patrick Mahomes — the Chiefs hold a top-10 draft pick.

That gives them flexibility.
But flexibility doesn’t fix cap math.
The franchise must balance:
- Retaining elite homegrown talent
- Protecting Mahomes
- Staying competitive
- Staying under the cap
And $30 million per year for a cornerback forces difficult decisions.
The Bottom Line
Trent McDuffie is worth top-tier money.
The question is whether the Chiefs can afford him — without sacrificing other pillars of their roster.
Andy Reid cleared space.
Now the front office has to decide how to use it.
