Drake Maye took hits in the Super Bowl. The Patriots may be preparing to make sure that never happens again.

After a season that ended on the biggest stage — but exposed cracks along the offensive line — New England is being linked to a proven veteran with Pro Bowl credentials.
And the message is clear: protect the franchise quarterback at all costs.
According to Fox Sports NFL reporter Greg Auman, the Patriots are a strong candidate to pursue free-agent guard Isaac Seumalo this offseason — a move that could instantly stabilize the interior line in front of 23-year-old star Drake Maye.
A Proven Bodyguard for a Rising Star

Seumalo isn’t just depth.
He’s experienced. He’s versatile. And he’s coming off a strong stretch of football.
The 32-year-old graded as Pro Football Focus’ No. 16 guard last season and earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2024 while finishing a three-year, $24 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He’s started games at both left and right guard — a crucial detail for a Patriots offensive line that needs flexibility as it reshuffles personnel.
And let’s not forget: Maye just completed an MVP-caliber second season, throwing for 4,394 yards with 31 touchdowns. If New England believes its championship window is reopening, protecting him becomes non-negotiable.
The Pittsburgh Question

Seumalo’s future in Pittsburgh suddenly feels uncertain.
The Steelers underwent significant coaching turnover, with Mike Tomlin no longer in the picture and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith heading back to the college ranks. That instability could open the door for a fresh start elsewhere.
There’s also another wrinkle: his former offensive line coach, Pat Meyer, is now in Buffalo — and could look to reunite with Seumalo if the Bills need a veteran presence.
In other words, competition is coming.
If the Patriots want him, they may need to move aggressively.
Is 32 Too Old?
That’s the real debate.

Seumalo will turn 33 during the 2026 season. Interior linemen can age well — but contracts become tricky in the early 30s. Auman raised the key question: can Seumalo command more money now than he did at 29?
For New England, it comes down to value versus urgency.
The Patriots don’t necessarily need a long-term solution at guard. They need reliability. They need protection. They need Maye upright in January.
And Seumalo offers exactly that.
A Clear Offseason Priority

The Patriots have already made it clear they won’t blame injuries for offensive struggles. They won’t make excuses for rhythm issues.
But they also know the AFC isn’t slowing down.
If Maye is truly the future — and all signs suggest he is — investing in the line becomes the most logical move of the offseason.
Signing Seumalo wouldn’t be flashy.
It wouldn’t dominate social media.
But it might be the difference between another Super Bowl appearance… and watching one from home.
New England’s next big move may not involve a wide receiver or a blockbuster trade.
It might involve a guard.

And for Drake Maye, that could change everything.
