Dodgers fans suddenly noticed something unusual at spring training—Mookie Betts was gone.
Rumors exploded online, but the truth revealed by manager Dave Roberts turned out to be far more personal than anyone expected.

Mookie Betts Steps Away From Dodgers Camp for a Special Reason as Family Awaits New Arrival
Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Mookie Betts briefly disappeared from the team’s spring training camp in Arizona this week, sparking waves of speculation among fans and media.
Was it an injury? A setback during training? Or something happening behind the scenes?
On Friday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts finally addressed the situation—and the answer had nothing to do with baseball.

Betts had temporarily left camp to be with his wife in Los Angeles as the couple prepares to welcome their third child.
Once the news became public, concern quickly turned into celebration across the Dodgers community.
For Betts, one of Major League Baseball’s biggest stars, family came first.
A Busy Offseason for the Dodgers Superstar
Betts’ brief absence comes after an unusually packed offseason.
While preparing for the upcoming 2026 MLB season, Betts also made headlines earlier this year by appearing as a coach during the NBA Celebrity All-Star Game, highlighting his popularity beyond baseball.

At the same time, the veteran made another surprising decision—he chose not to participate in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, a tournament where many expected him to represent Team USA.
The reason, it turns out, was tied to the same life event now unfolding: the imminent arrival of a new baby in the Betts family.
A Strong Start Before Leaving Camp
Despite stepping away from camp briefly, Betts had already begun preparing for the new season—and early signs were encouraging.

In limited spring training action, he recorded:
- 5 hits in 14 plate appearances
- 1 double and 1 RBI
- .357 batting average
- .429 slugging percentage
While it’s only a small sample size, the performance reminded fans that the eight-time All-Star still has plenty left in the tank.
According to Roberts, the break will be short.
Betts is expected to rejoin the Dodgers on Saturday and return to the lineup immediately.

Preparing for a Major Bounce-Back Season
The 2026 season carries extra motivation for Betts.
Last year was considered a career-low offensive season by his high standards, something the veteran is determined to correct.
With the Dodgers boasting one of the deepest lineups in baseball—including stars like Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Tucker—Betts is still expected to play a crucial role near the top of the batting order.
And to prepare for that challenge, he has embraced an unusual training method.
A Surprising Training Method Inspired by Yoshinobu Yamamoto
During the offseason, Betts began experimenting with javelin-throw training, a conditioning technique introduced by Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s trainer, Osamu Yada, often referred to as “Yada-sensei.”
The training focuses on improving:
- Shoulder strength
- Flexibility
- Injury prevention
For a veteran entering the later stages of his career, that combination could be critical.
“So far it’s been great,” Betts said.
“My shoulder feels great. We’ll see how it goes long term.”
Betts noted that the method requires proper coaching.
“It’s kind of like an all-in-one tool,” he explained. “But if you don’t know what you’re doing, you could probably hurt yourself. Luckily I’ve got the best teacher helping me.”
Playing One of Baseball’s Toughest Positions
Now 35 years old, Betts is continuing to challenge himself by playing shortstop, one of the most physically demanding defensive positions in baseball.
That decision makes conditioning and durability even more important.

Betts has pointed to Yamamoto’s incredible durability—especially pitching deep into the World Series under extreme pressure—as inspiration for adopting the new training approach.
A Bigger Moment Than Baseball
For now, however, Betts’ focus isn’t on statistics or lineup construction.
It’s on something far more meaningful.
The Betts family is preparing to welcome a new baby, and the Dodgers star wanted to be there for that moment.
Soon enough, he’ll return to spring training and continue preparing for another championship chase.
But for a brief moment, the priorities were simple.
Not baseball.
Not records.
Not championships.
Just family.
