One spring training performance can change everything — and Santiago Espinal may have just forced the Dodgers to make a decision.
After a stunning power display, the former All-Star is suddenly looking like one of the most valuable pieces on Los Angeles’ roster.

Spring training is often described as a proving ground — a place where process matters more than results and where players fight to show they belong.
For Santiago Espinal, that process is suddenly turning into a powerful statement.
During the Dodgers’ wild 14–13 walk-off loss to the Cincinnati Reds, the scoreboard told a chaotic story. But inside the Dodgers clubhouse, one storyline stood above the rest.
Santiago Espinal may have just secured his place on the Opening Day roster.

The versatile infielder delivered a jaw-dropping performance, launching two home runs and driving in six runs, instantly becoming the offensive centerpiece of the night.
Even more impressive was who he did it against.
Espinal’s blasts came off Emilio Pagán and Tony Santillan, two experienced arms from the Reds’ bullpen — a reminder that his power display wasn’t simply the result of facing inexperienced pitchers.
It was legitimate production.

And it continued what has quietly become one of the hottest starts of spring training.
Through his first six games in Dodgers camp, Espinal has been on fire, collecting eight hits in fourteen at-bats while adding multiple extra-base hits.
Suddenly, the narrative surrounding the former Blue Jays All-Star has completely shifted.
A Career Reboot in Los Angeles?
Espinal once looked like one of Toronto’s rising stars.

In 2022, he earned All-Star honors with the Blue Jays, showcasing elite defense and timely hitting. But the seasons that followed were far less kind.
After moving to the Cincinnati Reds, Espinal endured two difficult campaigns that left many wondering if his best days were behind him.
Now, a change of scenery may be rewriting that story.
The Dodgers — an organization known for revitalizing careers — may have found exactly the type of player they love: versatile, experienced, and suddenly surging at the right moment.
Dave Roberts Already Taking Notice
Even before Espinal’s breakout performance against Cincinnati, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had been openly praising the veteran’s presence around the team.

And it isn’t just about offense.
Espinal’s biggest value might be his incredible positional flexibility.
In the game against the Reds, he started at first base, but his defensive résumé includes experience at:
- Second base
- Shortstop
- Third base
- Corner outfield positions
That versatility could prove especially valuable early in the season.
Utility standout Kiké Hernández will begin the year on the injured list while recovering from elbow surgery, leaving an opening for a multi-position player capable of filling several roles across the diamond.
Right now, Espinal is making a convincing argument that he should be the one filling that gap.
Chaos on the Mound
While Espinal’s performance electrified the Dodgers offense, the pitching side of the night told a different story.

Veteran Cole Irvin struggled heavily, surrendering six runs, including three home runs. One of the loudest blows came from Elly De La Cruz, whose towering shot left the bat at a blistering 114.5 mph exit velocity.
Even after that, the Dodgers appeared to have the game under control.
Los Angeles entered the ninth inning with a three-run lead, but reliever Jordan Weems was ambushed by the Reds lineup, which exploded for four runs to steal the victory in dramatic fashion.
The result may not have gone the Dodgers’ way.
But Espinal’s performance still left a lasting impression.
A Crucial Opportunity Ahead
The Dodgers will return to action Friday night against the Kansas City Royals, sending promising young pitcher Jackson Ferris to the mound for his third spring start.
Ferris has yet to allow a run in 2.2 innings of work, adding another intriguing storyline to a spring camp filled with roster battles.
But after Thursday night’s fireworks, one thing feels increasingly clear.
Santiago Espinal didn’t just have a good game.
He may have forced the Dodgers to find a place for him.
