Two Dodgers teammates. Two proud baseball nations. One high-stakes international stage.
The World Baseball Classic is about to deliver a matchup fans didn’t expect — Shohei Ohtani vs. Hyeseong Kim.

The World Baseball Classic is known for turning teammates into rivals, and this weekend’s showdown will deliver one of the most intriguing clashes of the tournament.
For the first time in this year’s competition, Los Angeles Dodgers stars Shohei Ohtani and Hyeseong Kim will face each other on opposite sides of the field when Team Japan battles Team Korea on Saturday.
The matchup instantly becomes one of the most compelling storylines of the tournament — not just because of the fierce international rivalry between the two baseball powerhouses, but because two teammates from the same MLB clubhouse will now compete for national pride.

On one side stands Shohei Ohtani, the global superstar and centerpiece of Japan’s roster.
On the other is Hyeseong Kim, one of Korea’s key infielders determined to help his country challenge the tournament favorites.
For Dodgers fans, it will feel like watching a family rivalry unfold on baseball’s biggest international stage.
Japan’s Superstar vs. Korea’s Determined Challenger
Ohtani enters the tournament as the face of Team Japan, bringing his unmatched two-way talent to a squad widely considered one of the strongest in the entire WBC field.

While fellow Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto is also on Japan’s roster, he is expected to pitch in Japan’s opening game against Chinese Taipei before the Korea matchup.
Kim, meanwhile, is already getting a taste of WBC action.
Team Korea opened its tournament with a confident 11–4 victory over Czechia, and Kim started at the bottom of the lineup. Though he went 0-for-3 with a walk, he still scored a run as Korea cruised to its first win.

But the real test now arrives.
A Rivalry With History
Japan and Korea share one of the most intense rivalries in international baseball, and their previous meeting in the 2023 World Baseball Classic was anything but close.
Japan dominated that contest 13–4, with Ohtani delivering another standout performance by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Kim also appeared in that game for Korea but struggled at the plate, finishing 0-for-4 with a run scored.
Another familiar name from Major League Baseball, Tommy Edman, also featured for Korea in that matchup.

But this year’s meeting could tell a different story.
Respect Between Teammates
Despite competing for different nations, the mutual respect between Ohtani and Kim remains obvious.
Speaking before the matchup, Ohtani praised his Dodgers teammate.
“Hyeseong Kim is a truly excellent player in character, so I always enjoy being around him,” Ohtani said. “If we face each other, it will be a good opportunity for both of us.”
Kim echoed the sentiment, expressing excitement about facing his teammate in such a meaningful game.
“I’m definitely looking forward to it,” Kim said. “I haven’t played a ton against Team Japan with Team Korea, so I want to make sure I get to play against them this WBC.”
The Battle for Pool C
Both teams are competing in Pool C, one of the most competitive groups in the tournament.
The pool includes:
- Japan
- Korea
- Australia
- Chinese Taipei
- Czechia
Australia already opened the group stage with a victory over Chinese Taipei, while Korea’s win over Czechia puts them in a strong early position.
Japan, however, is widely viewed as the favorite to win the group — especially with Ohtani leading the charge.

Still, nothing is guaranteed in the WBC.
International tournaments are famous for surprise performances, emotional momentum, and unforgettable upsets.
Teammates Today, Rivals Tomorrow
For a few hours this weekend, the camaraderie of the Dodgers clubhouse will pause.
Instead, national pride will take center stage as two teammates battle for victory on behalf of their countries.
Once the final out is recorded, Ohtani and Kim will return to being teammates in Los Angeles.
But until then, the stage is set for one of the most fascinating showdowns of the World Baseball Classic.
And baseball fans everywhere will be watching.
