The Patriots are circling.
And if this rumor turns real, the AFC East could shift overnight.

Patriots Emerge as Contenders in Potential Maxx Crosby Blockbuster
The New England Patriots may be preparing to make the loudest move of the offseason.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, All-Pro defensive end Maxx Crosby could be on his way out of Las Vegas — and the Patriots are among the teams closely monitoring the situation.
If this turns into a bidding war, New England isn’t watching from the sidelines.

They’re in it.
Why Crosby Could Be Available
Crosby has been the heart of the Raiders’ defense since 2020, compiling:
- 439 total tackles
- 69.5 career sacks
- 11 forced fumbles
- 10 sacks last season alone
But Las Vegas appears to be entering another reset. With the likelihood of a rookie quarterback starting in 2026 and a roster that may need a year or two to fully rebuild, the Raiders face a tough question:

Will Crosby still be in his prime when they’re ready to win?
Breer laid out the dilemma clearly — move him now while his value is sky-high, or risk waiting and potentially losing leverage later.
And the trade could reportedly happen as soon as this week.
The Patriots’ Pass-Rush Problem
New England ranked 26th in the NFL in 2025 with just 35 sacks.
That’s not championship-level production.
Even after reaching Super Bowl LX, the Patriots’ inability to consistently pressure quarterbacks remains a glaring weakness. Head coach Mike Vrabel knows that if New England wants to take the next step, the defense must evolve from solid to suffocating.

Crosby would instantly fix that.
At 6-foot-5, 255 pounds, he’s relentless. High-motor. Durable. The type of edge rusher offenses must scheme around every snap.
Can the Patriots Afford Him?
Crosby is signed through 2029 at an average annual value of $29 million per year.
The financial mechanics are workable. The Raiders would absorb only $5.1 million in dead cap by trading him. New England has the flexibility to make it happen — though additional cap-clearing moves would likely be necessary.
The bigger question isn’t cap space.

It’s trade compensation.
Dallas, Chicago, Baltimore, Buffalo, Philadelphia, the Rams — and now New England — are all reportedly keeping tabs.
That kind of competition drives prices up fast.
Is He Worth It?
For Vrabel’s Patriots, the decision boils down to philosophy.
Do you:
- Trade premium draft capital for a proven All-Pro entering his prime?
- Or trust the draft and target a cheaper, developmental edge prospect?
Texas A&M’s Cashius Howell has been mentioned as a possible draft alternative. But prospects are projections.
Crosby is production.
If the Patriots truly believe their Super Bowl window is open now, adding an elite pass rusher might be the final piece.
The Bigger Picture
The AFC is loaded.
Kansas City still looms. Buffalo is aggressive. Baltimore reloads every year.

Standing pat isn’t an option.
If Maxx Crosby becomes available and New England hesitates, another contender won’t.
And if the Patriots pull the trigger?
The message will be loud:
They’re not satisfied with a Super Bowl appearance.
They want the ring.
