While Patriots fans watch every free agency move, New England quietly made another decision that could shape the future of its offense.
Behind the scenes, Mike Vrabel’s staff is growing—and a new coach has just entered the building.

Patriots Quietly Add Rising Coach Jonathan Decoster as New England Reshapes Offensive Staff
The New England Patriots may be dominating headlines with their free agency activity, but the organization is also making important moves behind the scenes.
In another step toward preparing for the 2026 NFL season, the Patriots have added Jonathan Decoster to their offensive coaching staff, continuing a steady effort to strengthen the team’s infrastructure around head coach Mike Vrabel.
According to NFL insider Joseph Pasteris, Decoster—most recently the assistant offensive line coach for the Florida Gators—is set to join the Patriots’ coaching staff. While the team has not yet officially announced his specific title, sources indicate that he is expected to work closely with offensive line coach Doug Marrone.

For a Patriots team focused on building long-term stability along the offensive line, the addition could prove significant.
From College Standout to Rising Coaching Voice
Before entering coaching, Decoster built his football foundation as a standout right tackle at the University of Louisiana. That experience in the trenches helped shape his coaching path, which has largely revolved around developing offensive linemen.
His coaching career began in 2013 at Nevada, where he worked as a graduate assistant focusing primarily on the offensive line.
Decoster quickly expanded his résumé.

By 2015, he joined West Virginia State, taking on multiple responsibilities including offensive line coach and strength coach. His versatility on staff helped establish him as a young coach capable of handling different roles.
In 2017, Decoster moved to LSU, where he spent three seasons as a graduate assistant working with tight ends. That position gave him experience within one of college football’s most competitive programs.
He later continued climbing the coaching ladder with a brief stop as tight ends coach at Old Dominion in 2020.
NFL Experience with the Cleveland Browns
Decoster then made the jump to the NFL, joining the Cleveland Browns coaching staff.
During his three seasons in Cleveland, he worked as an offensive quality control coach and later as an offensive assistant, gaining valuable experience in professional offensive systems and player development.
That exposure to the NFL game likely played a key role in New England’s decision to bring him onto its staff.
After his time with the Browns, Decoster returned to college football in 2024, joining the Florida Gators as assistant offensive line coach.

Success Developing Elite Offensive Line Talent
During his two seasons at Florida, Decoster helped guide one of the stronger offensive lines in college football.
His work was particularly evident in the development of center Jake Slaughter, who earned First-Team All-American honors from the Associated Press in 2024. Slaughter became just the third center in Florida program history to receive that recognition.
The achievement highlighted Decoster’s reputation as a coach capable of developing technically sound and highly productive linemen.
Key Role in Developing Patriots’ Young Offensive Line
Decoster’s arrival in New England also fills an important vacancy.
The Patriots recently lost assistant offensive line coach Robert Kugler, who departed to become tight ends coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Decoster is expected to help fill that gap while assisting in the development of several young Patriots offensive linemen, including left tackle Will Campbell and projected starting center Jared Wilson.

With the Patriots continuing to build around young offensive talent, strong coaching at the line of scrimmage could become a crucial factor in the team’s success.
Patriots Continue Major Coaching Staff Overhaul
Decoster is not the only new face joining Vrabel’s coaching staff this offseason.
New England has already added B.J. Edmonds and Charles London, though their official roles have not yet been publicly announced.
Edmonds previously worked as a defensive coach at Duke, where he focused on coaching cornerbacks. Before that, he spent time on coaching staffs at Utah State and Kansas Wesleyan.
London brings significant NFL experience as well. Most recently, he served as quarterbacks coach for the New York Jets in 2025. He also previously worked under Vrabel as quarterbacks coach and pass-game coordinator with the Tennessee Titans in 2023.
Their previous professional connection could help create continuity within the Patriots’ coaching structure.
The organization has also made several internal adjustments.
Special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer recently received a contract extension, while Vinny DePalma was promoted from coaching assistant to take over a new defensive role after staff reshuffling under Vrabel.

Together, these changes suggest that New England is actively reshaping its coaching staff to support its long-term vision.
While player acquisitions often dominate the headlines, coaching hires like Decoster’s could quietly play a crucial role in determining how successful the Patriots become in the years ahead.
