The unthinkable is being whispered in NFL circles.
Patrick Mahomes might not be under center when the 2026 season kicks off.
And if that happens, the AFC landscape could shift overnight.

Patrick Mahomes Predicted to Miss Start of 2026 Season Amid Knee Rehab
Kansas City Chiefs fans arenāt used to uncertainty at quarterback. For nearly a decade, Patrick Mahomes has been the franchiseās engine ā the difference between contender and chaos.
But heading into the 2026-27 season, thereās a cloud hanging over Arrowhead.

Mahomes is currently rehabbing from a serious ACL and LCL injury suffered during the 2025-26 season. While the expectation has long been that he would return in time for Week 1, not everyone is convinced that timeline is realistic.
In a February 24 ESPN feature, analyst Seth Walder projected that Mahomes may not start the season ā urging caution over optimism.
āAny prediction about his Week 1 status is just a guess,ā Walder noted, referencing Mahomesā December surgery to repair two ligaments in his left knee. While Mahomes has publicly stated he wants to be ready for the opener, recovery from multi-ligament knee injuries is notoriously unpredictable.
For a franchise built entirely around No. 15, the stakes couldnāt be higher.
During the 2025-26 regular season, Mahomes threw for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, finishing with a 62.7% completion rate. Even in a season disrupted by injury, he remained the teamās heartbeat.
Without him? The Chiefs look dramatically different.
Walderās projected contingency plan: veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota.

The 32-year-old former No. 2 overall pick started eight games for Washington last season while filling in for Jayden Daniels and posted a respectable 50.2 QBR. According to Walder, Mariota represents the type of steady, low-cost insurance Kansas City might need if Mahomes isnāt cleared in time.
The logic is simple: donāt rush your generational quarterback.
Kansas City would need someone capable of keeping the team afloat for a few games ā not replicating Mahomesā brilliance, but preventing the season from spiraling while he completes rehab.
And hereās the twist.
Even with the uncertainty surrounding Mahomesā health ā and despite missing the playoffs last season ā oddsmakers remain bullish on Kansas City.

DraftKings currently projects the Chiefs for 10.5 wins in 2026-27, ranking them third in the AFC behind only the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills. The betting markets are essentially saying this: even wounded, Kansas City is still dangerous.
Thatās the Mahomes effect.
But the margin for error shrinks dramatically if heās sidelined in September. The AFC is loaded. Early losses matter. Division races tighten fast.
The Chiefs could survive a short absence.

They cannot afford a rushed return that risks long-term damage.
So now, Kansas City faces a delicate decision: trust the rehab timeline ā or protect the dynasty at all costs.
For years, the NFLās opening weekend has felt like a Mahomes showcase.
In 2026, that may not be guaranteed.

And if No. 15 isnāt ready, the Chiefs ā and the AFC ā will feel it immediately.
