While the New England Patriots were busy reshaping their roster in free agency, they quietly made another move that could help shape their future—this time on the sidelines.

Patriots Add Veteran Offensive Coach to Mike Vrabel’s Staff
The New England Patriots continue building their new era under head coach Mike Vrabel, and their latest addition comes to the coaching staff.
According to reports, Jonathan Decoster is joining the Patriots as part of the offensive staff, bringing years of experience both in college football and the NFL.
While the team has not officially announced his exact title yet, the move signals another step in Vrabel’s effort to strengthen the Patriots’ coaching infrastructure.
Decoster Brings Diverse Coaching Background
Decoster’s coaching journey has taken him through multiple levels of football.

Before entering coaching, he was a four-year starting right tackle at the University of Louisiana, giving him a strong foundation as a former offensive lineman.
He began his coaching career in 2013 at Nevada as a graduate assistant working with the offensive line. From there, his résumé steadily expanded with several roles across the college football landscape.
Some of his stops included:
- West Virginia State, where he served in multiple roles including offensive line coach and strength coach
- LSU, where he worked for three seasons as a graduate assistant tight ends coach
- Old Dominion, where he spent a year as tight ends coach
That experience helped pave the way for his transition to the NFL.

NFL Experience With the Cleveland Browns
Decoster joined the Cleveland Browns in 2021, marking his first opportunity to coach in the NFL.
During his three seasons in Cleveland, he worked as:
- Offensive quality control coach
- Offensive assistant
Those roles gave him experience working within a professional offensive system and preparing players for weekly game plans.
Return to College Before Patriots Opportunity
After his time in Cleveland, Decoster returned to the college game in 2024, joining the Florida Gators as their assistant offensive line coach.
Now he’s heading back to the NFL.
His addition comes at a time when the Patriots appear to have an opening on their offensive line coaching staff following Robert Kugler’s departure to Pittsburgh, where he became the Steelers’ tight ends coach.
While Decoster’s exact role has yet to be confirmed, many expect him to help work with the Patriots’ offensive line or in a broader offensive assistant capacity.
Another Piece of Vrabel’s Coaching Staff
Decoster isn’t the only new face joining Mike Vrabel’s staff this offseason.

Reports indicate the Patriots have also added:
- B.J. Edmonds
- Charles London
Like Decoster, their specific roles have not yet been officially announced.
Still, the pattern is clear: Vrabel is steadily assembling a staff built around experience, development, and versatility.
Patriots Continue Building for the Future
The Patriots’ offseason has been focused not just on adding players but also strengthening the organization behind the scenes.

With a young quarterback in Drake Maye and several new offensive pieces arriving in free agency, the team appears committed to building a strong support system across both the roster and the coaching staff.
Decoster’s arrival adds another experienced voice to that process.

And as the Patriots continue reshaping their identity under Mike Vrabel, every addition—whether on the field or on the sidelines—plays a role in shaping what comes next.
