The Vikings let Sam Darnold walk in 2025.
One year later, he won the Super Bowl — and Minnesota is still dealing with the fallout.

Sam Darnold Leaves Vikings With One Final Gift After Painful Breakup
MINNEAPOLIS — When the Minnesota Vikings allowed Sam Darnold to leave in free agency in 2025, the organization believed it was making the right long-term decision.
Instead, the move quickly turned into one of the most painful “what-if” moments in recent franchise history.
Darnold went on to sign with the Seattle Seahawks, and in his very first season with the team he delivered the ultimate response: a Super Bowl championship.
For Vikings fans, the success of their former quarterback has been tough to watch.
But now, a small silver lining has finally arrived.
Vikings Receive Compensatory Draft Pick
The NFL recently awarded Minnesota a third-round compensatory draft pick (No. 97 overall) as compensation for losing Darnold in free agency.

The additional selection gives the Vikings:
- Two picks in the third round
- Four total selections inside the top 100 picks of the upcoming draft
While it doesn’t erase the sting of losing Darnold, the extra draft capital provides a valuable opportunity for the team to strengthen its roster.
The Decision to Move On
At the time, Minnesota believed moving on from Darnold made sense.

After helping the Vikings achieve an impressive 14–3 record during the 2024 season, Darnold was expected to command a large contract in free agency.
The team ultimately decided not to commit long-term money to the former No. 3 overall pick.
Instead, Minnesota turned the offense over to young quarterback J.J. McCarthy, hoping he would become the franchise’s long-term answer.
A Decision That Backfired
Unfortunately for the Vikings, the plan quickly unraveled.
McCarthy struggled badly in his first season as the starting quarterback, producing what many analysts described as one of the worst rookie starting seasons in NFL history.
The disappointing results triggered major changes inside the organization.
General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who played a key role in the decision to move on from Darnold, was fired in January after the season collapsed.

Meanwhile, Darnold was celebrating a championship in Seattle.
Vikings Still Searching for a Quarterback
The franchise now finds itself in an uncomfortable position.
After moving on from Darnold and watching McCarthy struggle, Minnesota is once again searching for a reliable quarterback — either through free agency or the draft.
And finding a player capable of maximizing the talents of superstar receiver Justin Jefferson has proven more difficult than expected.
A Small Consolation

The compensatory draft pick doesn’t change the past.
But it does give Vikings fans at least one small reason to look back on the Darnold era with a bit less frustration.
After all, even though the quarterback found his biggest success elsewhere, Minnesota will still benefit — at least slightly — from his departure.
It’s not a championship ring.

But for the Vikings, it’s something.
