The Chicago Bears are starting to shape their secondary for 2026 — and it begins with bringing back a familiar face.

Chicago has re-signed safety Elijah Hicks, adding depth to a position that is still undergoing major changes this offseason.
Bears Bring Back Elijah Hicks as Safety Depth Begins to Take Shape
The Chicago Bears have taken another step toward stabilizing their secondary by re-signing safety Elijah Hicks to a one-year deal.
Hicks returns to provide depth in a safety room that is still evolving after several offseason moves.
The Bears are expected to feature Coby Bryant as a starter, while the team could look to the 2026 NFL Draft to add another long-term option at the position.
Hicks Has Been a Reliable Backup
Although primarily used as a backup, Hicks has been forced into starting roles several times during his career.

Over his first three seasons in Chicago, he started 15 games while filling in for injured starters like Eddie Jackson and Jaquan Brisker.
His career numbers include:
- 122 tackles
- 3 pass breakups
- 61 total games played
Last season was the first time Hicks didn’t have to start a game, showing the value of having dependable depth behind the starters.
He’s also been a key contributor on special teams, making him valuable beyond just defensive snaps.
Bears Missed Out on Kevin Byard
Chicago had also pursued veteran safety Kevin Byard, but the All-Pro ultimately signed with the New England Patriots.

Byard revealed that his decision came down to two teams:
“It was either the Bears or the Patriots… and you know I have a relationship with Coach Vrabel,” Byard said.
That relationship with former Titans coach Mike Vrabel helped New England win the race.
What Happens With Jaquan Brisker?
The bigger question for Chicago may still be the future of Jaquan Brisker.
Brisker has been a key defensive playmaker, but the Bears must consider:
- His history of concussions
- His contract situation
- His fit in defensive coordinator Dennis Allen’s system
Allen’s defense requires safeties who can move all over the field — playing deep coverage, supporting the run, and blitzing.

Brisker has shown that versatility but hasn’t always been consistent in coverage.
Safety Could Become Draft Priority
With Hicks returning as a backup and Bryant likely starting, the Bears still may need another safety.
That means the position could become a top priority in the early rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Chicago’s front office appears focused on building a younger and more flexible secondary for the future.
Current Bears Safety Outlook
Projected Depth Chart (Early Offseason)
Starter: Coby Bryant
Depth: Elijah Hicks
Possible addition: Rookie safety from the draft
The Bears are clearly still working on finalizing the position.

But bringing Hicks back ensures they at least have experienced depth while the roster continues to take shape.
