Bears Coach Ben Johnson Explains Shirtless Celebration That Triggered Free Hot Dog Giveaway
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson never planned to go viral.
But after a huge win over the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, his spontaneous locker-room celebration did exactly thatâand it even led to free hot dogs for Chicago fans.
The moment quickly exploded across social media and turned into one of the most unforgettable celebrations of the NFL season.
A Bet With a Chicago Icon
The story started weeks earlier when Chicago hot dog stand The Wieners Circle made a bold promise.
The famous restaurant announced it would give away free hot dogs to everyone if Johnson celebrated a Bears victory by taking off his shirt.

When reporters asked Johnson about the idea at the time, the coach laughed and didnât commit.
But he also never ruled it out.
That decision would soon come back to life.
The Moment That Set It All Off

After the Bears defeated the Eagles 24â15 on Black Friday, Johnson addressed his players inside the locker room.
His speech quickly turned into an emotional rally.
âI know you guys are hungry for more, right?â Johnson shouted.
Then he added the line that set everything up:
âLet me tell you something â the city of Chicago is hungry too!â
Seconds later, the 39-year-old coach ripped off his shirt, sending players and staff into absolute chaos.
The locker room erupted.

And the internet soon followed.
Chicago Immediately Cashed In
Within minutes, The Wieners Circle responded on social media.

The restaurant confirmed it would honor its promise.
Free hot dogs would be given out at its Clark Street location beginning Tuesday morning.
Fans lined up to celebrate both the Bearsâ victory and Johnsonâs unforgettable moment.
Even Johnsonâs Family Was Confused
The coach later admitted the celebration wasnât planned at all.
âIt was a spur-of-the-moment deal,â Johnson said.
His family had no idea what was happening.
âMy wife was laughing,â he said. âMy two-year-old was pointing at the TV saying âno shirt, no shirt.ââ
A Coach Connecting With the City
Johnson said the real goal wasnât attentionâit was about the fans.
âI hate to draw attention away from our players,â he explained. âBut the intent was to bring up the city of Chicago.â
He added that the fans are a huge part of the teamâs journey throughout the season.
And if that meant feeding them along the way, he was happy to help.
Bears Rolling in Johnsonâs First Season

The celebration came during an incredible run for Chicago.
Under Johnsonâs leadership, the Bears have won nine of their last 10 games and currently hold the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
Itâs been a remarkable turnaround in the coachâs first year leading the franchise.
And judging by the locker room reactionâand the free food across Chicagoâhis connection with both players and fans is stronger than ever.
