The high ratings, a record for the past ten years, come after the show was suspended indefinitely last week following comments made by the host about the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kimmel had fallen out of favor with Brendan Carr, the head of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FCC). President Trump’s ally denounced the comedian’s “outrageous behavior.”Â

An emotional Kimmel revisited the decision in his monologue, saying it wasn’t “his intention” to “make fun of the murder of a young man.” He advocated for freedom of speech and called the decision to pull his show from the air “un-American.” “The American president applauds Americans losing their livelihoods because he can’t take a joke,” he said. The American comedian also took aim at Brendan Carr in the first episode after the uproar.Â

According to NBC News, an episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” typically draws around 1.6 million viewers. Moreover, his show wasn’t available in all American homes. Dozens of local stations continue to boycott the host, a tireless critic of President Donald Trump.
