A shocking NFL trade suddenly makes more sense — and it might have nothing to do with money.
Some insiders believe the real reason DJ Moore was traded may have been happening on the field all along.

Shocking Theory Emerges Behind DJ Moore Trade: Effort Concerns May Have Frustrated Bears Coach
CHICAGO — When the Chicago Bears traded star wide receiver DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills, the immediate explanation seemed obvious: money.
Moore carried a $24 million cap hit, and in today’s NFL financial landscape, that alone can trigger major roster decisions. But a growing theory suggests the trade may have been about something far more complicated — effort and accountability inside the Bears’ offense.

Former NFL quarterback and film analyst J.T. O’Sullivan recently offered a revealing perspective that has sparked fresh debate about why Chicago moved on from one of its most talented playmakers.
And the explanation may trace back to a message from Bears head coach Ben Johnson even before the 2025 season began.
“No block, no rock.”
The phrase was Johnson’s way of setting the tone for his offense — a system that demands every receiver contribute, even when they aren’t the primary target.
A Season That Raised Questions
Despite flashes of brilliance, Moore’s 2025 season turned into the worst statistical year of his eight-year career.
Ironically, he still delivered some unforgettable moments, including two dramatic game-winning touchdown catches against the rival Green Bay Packers.

But the overall production decline raised eyebrows inside and outside the organization.
According to O’Sullivan, the deeper issue may have been visible on film long before the trade happened.
“When you turn on the film, you see effort issues blocking,” O’Sullivan explained during a recent appearance on the Spiegel & Holmes Show. “Certainly effort issues on finishing routes when you know you’re not the primary receiver.”
That type of behavior, he argued, can quickly create tension inside a high-performance offense.
“When you have the ball in your hands, you’re a dynamic playmaker,” O’Sullivan said. “But when you don’t have the ball in your hands, you don’t play as fast.”
A Problem That Opponents Notice
What makes the issue more significant is that defenses study everything.
According to O’Sullivan, defensive coordinators quickly recognize when a receiver isn’t giving full effort on plays where they aren’t likely to receive the ball.
That knowledge can change how defenders react.

“If he’s not getting the ball immediately, he’s not necessarily going to run that hard,” O’Sullivan said. “We’re not worried about him running by us.”
In other words, opposing defenses may have started to treat Moore as a limited threat in certain situations — a dangerous development for an offense trying to operate at an elite level.
And if those habits were visible on film, they were almost certainly visible inside the Bears’ locker room as well.
A Potential Clash With Josh Allen?

Now Moore begins a new chapter with the Buffalo Bills, where he’ll catch passes from superstar quarterback Josh Allen.
O’Sullivan believes Moore could thrive in Buffalo’s system, possibly filling a Deebo Samuel-style role that utilizes his ability with the ball in space.
But there’s a catch.
Allen’s playing style could actually expose the very issues that may have frustrated Chicago.
Allen frequently extends plays, scrambling and improvising long after the initial route concepts break down.
When that happens, receivers must keep moving — adjusting their routes and staying active until the whistle blows.
“You have to keep playing,” O’Sullivan explained. “You can’t quit on routes.”
If Moore struggles with that aspect of the game, the dynamic between him and Allen could become complicated.
“Josh has the ability to extend and create,” O’Sullivan said. “And when he does that, you’ve got to feel the play and keep working downfield.”
A Trade That Now Looks Different
Rumors had already circulated about a potential disconnect between Moore and Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.
But with O’Sullivan’s analysis, the situation appears even more layered.

What initially looked like a straightforward salary-cap decision may have actually been the result of frustration building inside the Bears’ offensive system.
Now Moore has a chance for a fresh start in Buffalo.
But if the concerns about effort persist, the debate surrounding one of the NFL’s most surprising trades may only just be beginning.
