Patrick Mahomes sidelined. Tua Tagovailoa in red and gold?
It sounds like NFL fan fiction â but itâs suddenly being floated as a very real possibility.

The Kansas City Chiefs are staring at uncertainty heading into 2026. Mahomes, the face of the franchise and two-time MVP, is rehabbing from surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee â an injury serious enough to cloud his Week 1 availability.
And when Mahomesâ status is uncertain, everything shifts.
The Mahomes Question
Mahomes has publicly expressed optimism about returning in time for the season opener. But insiders arenât so sure.
ESPN analyst Seth Walder recently projected that Kansas City may not have Mahomes ready for Week 1, pointing to the complexity of repairing two knee ligaments.

âAny prediction about his Week 1 status is just a guess,â Walder noted, adding that the Chiefs would likely err on the side of caution given Mahomesâ value to the franchise.
Translation: Kansas City canât afford to rush him.
Right now, the only quarterback under contract is practice-squad arm Chris Oladokun.
Thatâs not exactly reassuring for a Super Bowl-caliber roster.
Which is where things get interesting.
Enter: Tua Tagovailoa?
According to ESPNâs Dan Graziano, the Miami Dolphins are expected to move on from Tua Tagovailoa, potentially designating him as a post-June 1 release.
Despite trade talks, skepticism around a deal remains high â largely due to Tuaâs fully guaranteed $54 million 2026 salary.
If Miami releases him, however, everything changes.
USA Todayâs Dolphins Wire suggested the Chiefs could become a prime landing spot â particularly if Mahomes isnât ready.
And the numbers arenât trivial.
Tagovailoa brings:
- 18,166 career passing yards
- 120 touchdowns
- 59 interceptions
- 68.0% career completion rate
Thatâs not a developmental backup. Thatâs a former franchise quarterback with playoff experience.
A Temporary Power Shift?
The idea of Tua backing up â or temporarily replacing â Mahomes feels surreal.
But from a football standpoint, it makes sense.
Kansas City has a win-now roster. If Mahomes needs time, the Chiefs canât afford to drift in the AFC West while waiting for their superstar to return.
Tagovailoa would represent stability, experience, and upside â arguably the best available bridge option in the league.
Other Options on the Table
Walder floated another possibility: Marcus Mariota, a veteran journeyman with starting experience.
Gardner Minshew is also a familiar name. He briefly stepped in this past season before suffering his own injury.
But neither carries the production profile or ceiling that Tua offers.
If he hits the open market, Kansas City would be facing a rare opportunity: add an 18,000-yard passer as insurance behind the leagueâs most valuable quarterback.
Risk, Reward, and Respect
Mahomesâ injury alone has sparked whispers â some even calling recent quarterback rankings âdisrespectful.â
But this isnât about replacing Mahomes long term.
Itâs about survival.
Itâs about protecting a championship window.
And if the Chiefs believe Tua can hold the line for a few weeks â or even longer â the move could be bold, controversial, and absolutely strategic.
The AFC arms race isnât slowing down.
And Kansas City may be preparing for every scenario.
