Things got deep during Jamie Lee Curtisâ visit to the Today show on Tuesday.
The Oscar winner was on the morning show to discuss her new film Ella McCay, but things went off course when Curtis noticed host Craig Melvin was wearing an earring in one ear. Before the co-anchor could begin questioning her about the comedy movie, Curtis asked Melvin to tell her the story of the blue earring.
Melvin handled the turned tables well, explaining he got the earring in support of his 9-year-old daughter Sybil.

âMy daughter, years ago, she went to go get her ears pierced and she got cold feet, and in a moment of haste, I was like, âIf I do it, will you do it?â And she was like, âYes!’â Melvin shared with the Halloween star.
âOh, come on!â Curtis exclaimed. âThatâs gorgeous!â
Melvin thanked Curtis before veering the conversation back to her upcoming project, confessing that the moment had him âblushing now.â
But Melvinâs story was clearly still on Curtisâ mind since she continued to reference his reasoning for getting the colorful bling throughout the rest of her interview. When Melvin brought up a thank you message fitness icon Susan Powter sent Curtis for sharing her story as an executive producer of the Stop the Insanity: Finding Susan Powter documentary, the actress got emotional as she connected the note and the anecdote Melvin previously shared.

âItâs why weâre here,â she said, getting choked up. âItâs why you love what you do. Itâs why you said to your daughter, âYou know what, if I get it, will you get it?â And you did.â
She went on, tearing up, âItâs a beautiful thing you did that and I love that you keep it. And I love that these people didnât make you say, âEh, you know, I donât want you to have an earring.â Iâm not joking! Iâm glad that you were able to say, âThis is important to me. This is my daughter, my connection to my daughter.’â
The interview ended on a sentimental note as Melvin and Curtis embraced with the co-anchor telling the actress, âI just love you, everything about you.â
Finding Susan Powter explores Powterâs current life in Nevada, where she sustains herself with a low-paying gig as an Uber Eats driver after shady business deals and what she labels a dishonest team around her led to the loss of a nearly $300 million fortune.
Directed by Zeberiah Newman, the documentary picks up years after the â90s health and wellness figure â perhaps best known for 1992âs Stop the Insanity! weight-loss infomercial â disappeared from the spotlight.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly last October, Curtis called the documentary a critique of societal behaviors.
âIt was an indictment of how we discard human beings as they get older in this country. Itâs an exploration of the incredible cruelty that we inflict on older people and the lack of resources, and the lack of dignity offered to these human beings whoâve lived before us and have been in service to us and have given us the lives we all are now living,â Curtis said at the time. âItâs an indictment to every family who has shuttered away the elderly in that forgotten, awful way that they do. It is an indictment of how we treat older people in our work lives.â
Stop the Insanity: Finding Susan Powter is now playing in select theaters.
