The reigning WNBA champions are gearing up for another deep postseason run — and they’re doing it by bringing in one of the league’s most decorated veterans.
ESPN reported on July 21 that the New York Liberty have reached an agreement with former Finals MVP Emma Meesseman, adding another battle-tested star to an already elite roster. The 6-foot-4 Belgian forward last appeared in the WNBA in 2022 with the Chicago Sky and is best known for leading the Washington Mystics to the 2019 championship, where she earned Finals MVP honors.
Meesseman, 32, is expected to join the Liberty as soon as she completes the required visa paperwork. In her most recent WNBA season, she averaged 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists for Chicago and played earlier this year with Belgium’s national team at EuroBasket.

Before committing to New York, Meesseman also drew interest from the Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury, two teams looking to boost their playoff prospects. Ultimately, she chose a Liberty squad headlined by Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones — a core determined to make New York only the second team in the past two decades to win back-to-back titles.
Jones captured the 2024 Finals MVP as the Liberty outlasted Minnesota 3–2 to secure the franchise’s first championship, and the addition of Meesseman gives New York another high-IQ playmaker with championship pedigree.
