SAN DIEGO — The tense family dispute surrounding ownership of the San Diego Padres appears to be nearing a resolution.
According to multiple reports, including The Athletic and the San Diego Union-Tribune, Sheel Seidler, the widow of late Padres owner Peter Seidler, has agreed to drop most of the legal claims she filed against Peter’s brothers regarding control of the franchise.

The lawsuit had been filed last year in Texas probate court, where Sheel Seidler challenged actions taken by Matt Seidler and Bob Seidler, who serve as trustees of Peter Seidler’s trust.
In a new court filing Monday, the parties confirmed they have reached “an agreement to resolve the matters between them.” As part of that agreement, Sheel Seidler will not be able to refile the claims in the future.

The dispute emerged following the death of Peter Seidler in November 2023, a moment that left the Padres organization facing significant uncertainty regarding the franchise’s leadership structure.
After Peter’s passing, John Seidler, the eldest brother in the family, stepped into the ownership role and also serves as a trustee of the family trust.

While the settlement resolves much of the legal tension within the Seidler family, the long-term future of the Padres could still be in flux.

In November, the Seidler family confirmed it was exploring the possibility of selling the team.
Reports suggest the family could seek a price well above the $1.95 billion valuation assigned to the franchise in March 2025.
Several high-profile potential buyers have already been linked to the process.
Among the rumored candidates:
• Joe Lacob, owner of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors
• Dan Friedkin, owner of Italian soccer club AS Roma
• José E. Feliciano, owner of English club Real Mallorca
Any potential sale would represent one of the most significant ownership transitions in Major League Baseball in recent years.

For now, however, the legal resolution between family members may provide a degree of stability for the franchise — at least in the short term.
As the Padres continue to compete on the field, attention across baseball will remain fixed on what happens next behind the scenes.

Because the future ownership of one of MLB’s most ambitious franchises could soon be decided.
