Sam Darnold left Minnesota — and then won a Super Bowl somewhere else.
Now the Vikings are finally getting a small consolation prize.

Vikings Receive Compensatory Pick After Sam Darnold’s Departure
The Minnesota Vikings are still feeling the impact of letting quarterback Sam Darnold leave in free agency last year.
But the NFL has now provided the team with a small silver lining.
Minnesota has been awarded a third-round compensatory pick (No. 97 overall) in the 2026 NFL Draft as compensation for losing Darnold to the Seattle Seahawks in 2025 free agency.
A Super Bowl Season for Darnold

After leaving Minnesota, Darnold signed a multi-year contract with Seattle — and the move quickly paid off.
During the 2025 season, Darnold helped lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl championship, making the Vikings’ decision to move on from him look even more questionable.
For Minnesota fans, watching a former quarterback win a title elsewhere only added to the frustration.
Vikings’ Gamble on J.J. McCarthy
At the time, the Vikings believed they were making the right choice.

Despite Darnold helping the team achieve an impressive 14–3 record in the 2024 season, Minnesota opted not to re-sign him.
Instead, the team handed the starting job to J.J. McCarthy.
Unfortunately, the move didn’t work out as planned.
McCarthy struggled badly during his first season as the starter, producing one of the least effective rookie starting quarterback seasons in recent NFL history.
Organizational Changes Followed
The fallout from the decision was significant.
Former Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who played a key role in moving on from Darnold, was fired in January following the disappointing season.
The team is now searching for stability at the quarterback position again.
Draft Help for Minnesota

While the compensatory pick doesn’t erase the pain of losing Darnold, it does give the Vikings additional draft capital.
The new pick means Minnesota now holds:
- Two third-round selections
- Four picks within the top 100 of the 2026 NFL Draft
For a team expected to rebuild parts of its roster, those picks could become valuable assets.

Still Looking for a Quarterback
Despite the extra draft pick, Minnesota’s biggest challenge remains finding a quarterback who can maximize the talents of superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

The Vikings are currently exploring free agency options while also preparing for the upcoming draft.
In the end, the compensatory pick may provide some comfort — but it won’t fully erase the regret of letting Sam Darnold walk away before his championship season.
