The Toronto Blue Jays fell just short of winning the World Series last season. Now the team must navigate free agency to build another team that can make a run to the Fall Classic.
Part of the Blue Jays’ responsibilities this winter will be building depth throughout the organization. Teams deal with injuries and often rely on minor leaguers to help cover innings. Last season, the Blue Jays signed Elieser Hernández to a minor league contract after he spent time in the Korea Baseball Organization. After a shaky stint with Triple-A Buffalo, he elected free agency on Nov. 6.
Hernández signed with the LG Twins in the middle of the 2024 season. Last season, he got off to a shaky start. He had two scoreless outings sandwiching two bad outings before he suffered an abductor injury. Overall, he made 14 starts with a 4.23 ERA.

The Twins released him when they signed Anders Tolhurst on Aug. 3. Hernández then signed with the Blue Jays on a minor league contract. He had a 7.91 ERA in four starts in Triple-A. He has six seasons of big league experience, pitching for the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers.
He has a 5.10 ERA in the big leagues. He has made 49 starts and has pitched in a total of 99 games. He has not found much success in the big leagues, but he could be a solid depth piece. He could also try to pitch internationally again, hoping to rebuild some value.
