The NFL has officially weighed in on the controversy surrounding Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyler Guyton after Thursday night’s heated NFC East rivalry clash against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The incident occurred in the second quarter when cameras caught Guyton striking Eagles defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo during a scramble at the line of scrimmage. While officials on the field failed to throw a flag, the replay quickly spread across social media, igniting debate over whether the young lineman would face league discipline.
In a statement released Friday, Commissioner Roger Goodell emphasized the league’s responsibility to address such incidents while also acknowledging the emotional backdrop of rivalry games. “Tyler Guyton had no record of misconduct last season, and in a rivalry game, heated moments are often difficult to avoid. Still, he must be held accountable for his actions. Discipline is necessary, but at the same time, we believe in giving players the opportunity to learn, to grow, and to represent the NFL with the standard expected of them.”

The Cowboys, for their part, have not imposed any internal punishment, with head coach Mike McCarthy telling reporters the team would “let the league process play out” before making further decisions.
Ultimately, the NFL announced that Guyton will be fined $16,332 under the league’s collective bargaining agreement for unsportsmanlike conduct. The penalty avoids suspension, meaning the second-year lineman will remain available for Dallas’ upcoming divisional matchups.
For the Cowboys, the ruling offers relief but also a warning. Any repeat offense could trigger harsher consequences, including suspension — another reminder of how thin the margins are in one of football’s fiercest rivalries.
