Injuries are piling up for the Dallas Cowboys at wide receiver heading into Week 5. The team still awaits the return of CeeDee Lamb, who was spotted Wednesday out of the walking boot he was rocking on the sidelines last Sunday during the team’s game versus the Green Bay Packers.
But now, it’s his teammate, KaVontae Turpin, that was added to the injury report as a non-participant with a foot injury. He suffered the injury during the Cowboys’ 40-40 tie to the Packers. If Turpin misses the upcoming matchup against the New York Jets, the Cowboys will feel his absence on offense and on special teams as he’s been one of the best kick returners in the NFL since his arrival at the league in 2022.
In the NFL, however, one player’s unfortunate circumstances can be the break another was waiting for. And there’s reason to believe Turpin’s injury—combined with that of running back Miles Sanders, also a non-participant on Wednesday—could push a rookie into the spotlight in Week 5.
Cowboys rookie RB Jaydon Blue in line to finally make regular season debut
Blue has surprisingly been listed as a healthy scratch in each of the Cowboys’ first four games of the season. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer has cited lack of consistency and need for defensive depth as the biggest reasons why. The decision has been a major shock to fans after Blue stood out in training camp and in the single preseason game he played in August but Schottenheimer has been firm about it. That could change with the injuries the team navigates.
On offense, the Cowboys could need running back depth behind Javonte Williams as Miles Sanders works through an ankle injury, also suffered in Week 4. Enter Blue. On special teams, Blue’s speed could replace Turpin’s. Enter the rookie, again.
Need might not be the only reason why Blue debuts Sunday. On Wednesday, Schottenheimer told the media the rookie has been consistent in practice as of late.
“Jaydon’s actually put together a couple really good weeks of practice,” Schottenheimer said Monday on 105.3 The Fan. “He has. We challenged him, we talked to him about consistency, working harder on the scout team and things like that, man it’s huge. Give him credit, he’s been terrific.”
Blue’s chances of playing Sunday are looking good, even if it’s a byproduct of unfortunate injuries to his teammates. The Cowboys will announce their inactive players 90 minutes before kickoff on Sunday. An Unexpected Twist May Hand a Dallas Cowboys Rookie the Breakout Opportunity He’s Been Waiting For Against the Jets
