LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Sparks waived veteran center Mercedes Russell, in a move that all but confirms they’re ready to welcome Cameron Brink back to the lineup.
Russell signed with the Sparks in February to provide experienced frontcourt depth. She played in 20 games this season, averaging 8.2 minutes, 1.7 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.6 assists, and 0.3 steals. Her role was mainly to help cover injuries, especially while Brink recovered from her ACL and meniscus injury last June.
Brink, the No. 2 pick in last year’s WNBA Draft is reportedly close to returning. She’s already shown strong signs in practices, and the Sparks clearly see her as a cornerstone for the future. Releasing Russell gives the team flexibility to sign someone else as well as they are now down to 11 players.
The Sparks have struggled to find consistency all season, cycling through hardship deals and short-term signings. At 6-14, they need Brink’s defensive presence and energy to turn things around.
Russell, who won a championship with Seattle in 2020, now becomes an unrestricted free agent. Her experience could be valuable to teams looking for veteran depth in the frontcourt.
The Sparks face the Connecticut Sun tomorrow, and all eyes will be on whether Brink suits up for her return.
