The Houston Astros’ 2026 season could ultimately come down to the performance of one player: Lance McCullers Jr.

Just a few years ago, Houston’s starting rotation was one of the strongest in baseball. When the Astros captured the 2022 World Series, their pitching staff was a major reason for their dominance.
Since then, however, that strength has faded.
A rotation searching for stability

Injuries ravaged Houston’s rotation during the 2025 season, leaving the team scrambling to piece together innings.
Only Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown managed to surpass 90 innings pitched, highlighting the lack of healthy arms throughout the year. That instability eventually pushed the Astros’ front office to acquire Tatsuya Imai in hopes of strengthening the staff.
Even with that addition, the rotation remains one of the roster’s biggest question marks heading into 2026.
Because of that uncertainty, analysts believe the team’s biggest X-factor could be McCullers.
A frustrating stretch since signing extension

When Houston signed McCullers to a five-year extension in 2022, the expectation was that he would remain a key part of the rotation for years to come.
Instead, injuries have dominated the story.
Since signing that deal, McCullers has thrown just 103 total innings, missing extensive time due to a series of arm issues.
- He missed all of 2023 with a strained tendon and bone spur in his arm.
- Continued setbacks forced him to also miss the entire 2024 season.
- When he finally returned in 2025, he spent time on the injured list three separate times.
Across 21 starts during that stretch, McCullers posted a 4.54 ERA, far below the expectations Houston had when they committed long-term money to him.
A crucial season for both sides

Now entering the final year of his contract, McCullers faces a pivotal season.
For the Astros, a healthy version of the right-hander could significantly change the outlook of their rotation. Pairing McCullers with Imai, Hunter Brown, and Cristian Javier would give Houston a much deeper and more dangerous pitching staff.
But if injuries continue to limit him, the Astros could once again find themselves scrambling to fill innings.
A looming free agency decision

Regardless of how the season unfolds, McCullers is set to become a free agent after 2026.
His long injury history could make the market difficult, especially if he struggles to stay healthy again this year. That reality makes this season particularly important for both the pitcher and the franchise.
For Houston, it may represent one final chance to get meaningful value from a contract that has largely failed to deliver.
And for McCullers himself, 2026 may be the defining year that determines the future of his career.
