The Houston Astros’ newest first-round pick, Xavier Neyens, will be one of the headlining prospects when the organization participates in MLB’s Spring Breakout showcase later this month.

Major League Baseball recently released the prospect player pools for the third annual Spring Breakout event, which highlights top minor league talent during spring training. The Astros’ prospects will take on the Miami Marlins’ prospects on March 19 at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida, with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m. ET.

Houston’s prospect pool for the event is stacked.
According to MLB Pipeline, 28 of the Astros’ top 30 prospects are included in the player pool for the game. While not every player will appear in the final lineup, the event will give fans and scouts a rare opportunity to see the organization’s top young talent on the same field.
Among the most notable names are:
- Xavier Neyens – 2025 first-round pick
- Kevin Alvarez – Astros’ No. 1 overall prospect
- Miguel Ullola – highly regarded pitching prospect
- Walker Janek – former first-round catcher
- Brice Matthews – infielder who debuted in MLB last season
Xavier Neyens Leads the Group

Neyens, a 6-foot-4 left-handed infielder, was selected by Houston in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft out of Mount Vernon High School in Washington.
The Astros signed him for a slot bonus exceeding $4 million, convincing him to skip his commitment to Oregon State.
Instead of sending him directly into the minor league system, Houston chose a more patient development path by placing him at their training complex in West Palm Beach.
Scouts are particularly excited about Neyens’ offensive potential. He carries a 65-grade power rating on the 20–80 scouting scale, projecting him as a future middle-of-the-order slugger.
Although he has primarily played infield, many evaluators believe his long-term position could ultimately be third base, where his power bat would profile well at the major league level.
Kevin Alvarez Also a Major Attraction

Another player drawing significant attention is Kevin Alvarez, currently ranked as Houston’s top prospect.
The Cuban outfielder signed with the Astros during last year’s international signing period for $2 million after training in the Dominican Republic.
He made an immediate impression during his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League, posting:
- .301 batting average
- .419 on-base percentage
- .455 slugging percentage
- .874 OPS
- 33 RBIs
Alvarez is expected to begin the 2026 season either in the Florida Complex League or with Single-A Fayetteville.
Spring Breakout Format Changing Soon

The Spring Breakout event will undergo a major change starting next year.
Beginning in 2027, the showcase will become a single-elimination tournament featuring teams from both the Grapefruit League and Cactus League. Each league will crown a champion in a four-day event scheduled for March 19–22.
For now, the exhibition-style games still offer a valuable preview of the next generation of MLB stars.

And for the Astros, the spotlight will firmly be on Xavier Neyens and a loaded crop of young talent poised to shape the franchise’s future. ⚾
