WNBA champions Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu displayed their love of their fans by making the effort to personally greet supporters during the New York Liberty trophy parade.
It’s a third overall title for Stewart, 30, who won two championships with the Seattle Storm, and a first for Ionescu, 26, who was drafted number one overall by the New York outfit in 2020.

The pair, alongside the rest of their team-mates, were aboard the bus as they were showered with love by thousands of fans in Manhattan who lined up to celebrate a basketball title finally returning to New York.
As loyal fans threw confetti from a balcony above the parade route while unfurling their own banner reading “We love New York Liberty”, Stewart and Ionescu took it upon themselves to jump off their respective floats to meet the fans on the ground.

Not only are the franchise players of the team regarded as among the best players in the league, but it’s their character which former team-mates and coaches have pinpointed that has driven them to achieve greatness.
Kelly Sopak, Ionescu’s coach from third grade until college, said her approachable personality and ability to be coached are among her greatest attributes. “She’s such an incredible ambassador for the game itself,” he said.
“The team is so approachable, that’s why people feel a part of their journey. And she’s very approachable and that trickles down. It’s contagious and infectious. She’s obviously had really cool parenting and coaching along the way, and that’s helped keep her humble and still hungry.
“That fits in with Kobe and LeBron—it’s cool that they’re validating her as a player, but I don’t think she needs them in that regard. But it’s super cool that they’re paying attention to that and recognizing that.”

Similarly with Stewart, it’s her unwavering belief and big heart that has endeared her to her team-mates and the WNBA fanbase, according to former colleague Epiphanny Prince.
The 2020 WNBA champion, who is now the New York Liberty’s Director of Player & Community Engagement waxed lyrical about Stewart’s drive to win. “If we went down by 20 points in the fourth quarter, she’s still telling us we can win,” Prince told The Next.
“I say that word because it’s just like she believes that she can beat anybody and anything that you put in front of her. She’s going to overcome.”
