With the World Baseball Classic underway, stars from across Major League Baseball are joining forces for their national teams. Among the biggest names representing Team USA are Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper and New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge.

While their partnership on the international stage has created excitement, Harper’s repeated praise of Judge has also sparked discussion about what it might signal for the Phillies’ front office.
Harper’s Longstanding Respect for Judge

Harper and Judge have shared a mutual respect for years.
Their relationship dates back to 2018, when Judge reportedly tried to recruit Harper to join the Yankees during his free agency. Although Harper ultimately signed with Philadelphia, the two players have maintained a strong friendship.
Now that they are teammates with Team USA, Harper has openly expressed how excited he is to share the field with Judge.
“Obviously, I respect everything he’s done, the career he’s had. He’s such a pro. But relationship-wise, it’s more than just about the game.”
Harper also emphasized his admiration for Judge’s leadership.
“There’s nobody else I’d rather be wearing the captaincy on his chest than Judgey. I’m excited to play with him.”
Those comments reflect genuine respect between two of baseball’s biggest stars, but they also highlight a broader issue facing the Phillies.
Phillies’ Lineup Protection Concerns

One of the challenges Philadelphia faced during the 2025 season was a lack of consistent protection in the lineup behind its biggest hitters.
Harper finished the season with:
- .844 OPS
- 27 home runs
- 75 RBIs
However, opposing pitchers often avoided giving him hittable pitches. According to FanGraphs data, Harper saw just 42.9% of pitches in the strike zone, the lowest rate in Major League Baseball.
Without another elite hitter directly behind him in the lineup, teams frequently pitched around him.
Judge, by contrast, benefits from a Yankees lineup built to ensure opposing pitchers can’t simply avoid him.
Offseason Questions in Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s front office, led by Dave Dombrowski, did not add another major bat during the offseason. That decision left the team largely dependent on its existing core of hitters, including Harper and Kyle Schwarber.
For a player like Harper, who thrives when pitchers are forced to challenge him, that lack of lineup reinforcement could continue to affect his offensive opportunities.
A Reminder for the Front Office

Harper has repeatedly expressed strong appreciation for his Phillies teammates, and there’s no clear indication that his admiration for Judge reflects any dissatisfaction with Philadelphia.
Still, the contrast between the two lineup environments serves as a reminder of what elite hitters value most: protection and support in the batting order.
If the Phillies want Harper to return to MVP-level production — and keep their championship window open — ensuring he has adequate lineup protection should remain a priority.

For now, Harper and Judge will share the same lineup during the World Baseball Classic, giving fans a glimpse of what two of baseball’s most powerful hitters can do when they’re finally on the same side. ⚾
