Sabrina Ionescu has been on fire this 2024-25 season, but her passion boiled over on Saturday night in a way that quickly went viral. In a tough 101-99 loss against the Sparks, the New York Liberty fell on a heartbreaking buzzer-beater, with Ionescu’s frustration visible for the entire world to see.
All it took was one controversial screen call to shift Ionescu’s spotlight from her impressive scoreline to her animated outburst.
How Did One Call Change Everything for Sabrina Ionescu?

Ionescu put up 30 points on 12-for-22 shooting on Saturday night at the Barclays Center. Despite it being her 16th such game of her career, a moment from the third quarter lit up social media and overshadowed her stellar performance.
The sequence began innocently enough. Ionescu drilled a smooth three-pointer off a handoff from Jonquel Jones, celebrating what appeared to be another clutch bucket. However, celebrations were cut short as the officials called an illegal screen, wiping the basket away.
This call stunned Ionescu, who immediately erupted in frustration. In her annoyance, she approached the officials and appeared to demand a technical foul, shouting, “Tech me, tech me!”

She got her wish. The technical foul sparked conversations across the league and social media, with many questioning whether it was justified passion or a loss of composure. Still, her reaction captured what many players have expressed throughout the 2024-25 campaign about inconsistencies in officiating.
What Made This Loss Even More Heartbreaking?

The Liberty trailed by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, but behind Ionescu and Natasha Cloud, they mounted a fierce comeback. Ionescu tied the game at 99 with a clutch jumper with just 23 seconds left on the clock, setting up what should have been overtime.
But Los Angeles had the final say. After a timeout, Rickea Jackson hit an acrobatic buzzer-beating shot to hand the Sparks their fifth straight win while snapping New York’s own five-game streak.
Adding to the night’s woes, Liberty forward Breanna Stewart left the game early due to an injury and did not return. She scored just three points before exiting, delivering a serious blow to New York’s momentum when they needed her most.
Despite this loss, the Liberty still sit second in the league standings at 17-7, while the Sparks improve to 11-14 with their gritty road win. New York will face its next challenge Monday against rookie standout Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings.
As for Ionescu, her frustration may have gotten the better of her in the moment, but it also showed the intensity and competitive fire that make her among the best in the league. Whether or not the league will address these officiating concerns remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Ionescu is not backing down.
