Late Show” host Stephen Colbert mocked President Donald Trump as “Captain Cankles” after his low-energy address to military leaders on Tuesday, starting with his slow approach to the lectern.
“That shamble up to the mic was about as high as his energy got for the whole day,” Colbert said. “The president is so anti-woke he’s barely conscious.”
Trump complained about the “silent” room, as military leaders don’t typically applaud or react to political speeches, then went on tangents about everything from “the N-word” to types and quality of paper.
But the oddest moment may have been when he discussed his approach to stairs.
“I’m very careful, you know, when I walk down stairs,” he said. “I walk very slowly. You don’t have to set any record. Be cool.”
Then, the president complained about how former President Barack Obama tackled stairs.
“Be cool when you walk down, but don’t bop down the stairs,” Trump said. “So, one thing with Obama, I had zero respect for him as a president, but he would bop down those stairs, I’ve never seen.”
Trump then did some sound effects and gestures to describe how Obama would “bop” down staircases.
When the camera came back to Colbert, he had a confused look on his face and stood silent for more than 10 seconds as the audience laughed.
“What the hell are you talking about?” he eventually said.
He asked for footage of Obama walking down the stairs of Air Force One ― but when the clip rolled, it also had Trump’s sound effects.
“OK, I stand corrected,” Colbert snarked.
