The couple tied the knot in 2011 and share kids Del and Sybil

Craig Melvin’s proposal to his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, didn’t exactly go to plan.

The Today co-anchor, 46, shared his own engagement story with the Today Show Radio in the wake of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s big engagement news.

“Not a garden, I did it on a boat down in Miami,” Melvin told Holly Palmieri when she asked if he popped the question in a garden-like settling similar to the all-star couple. “It was a place that was special to her — she worked there. She lived there for a while.”

And while that all sounds like it has the makings of a magical moment, Melvin said several things were off when he decided to pop the question. “It was a surprise, and it almost didn’t go well because I was all fumble-y and the boat was late,” he admitted.

However, it was his future bride’s response that really took the cake when it came to the flubs. “Do you know the first thing she said to me after I asked her? I prepared this thing in my head — she’s gonna hate me for telling this story,” Melvin quipped.

He added, “The first thing she said, I said, ‘Will you marry me?’ I kid you not, ‘I think I’m gonna throw up.’ She said, ‘I think I’m gonna throw up.’ ”

Melvin’s response was to immediately question his decision. “In the moment I was like, ‘Maybe I misread this? Maybe I overplayed my hand? It seems like it had been going well for a couple years,’ ” he remembered thinking. “And she was like, ‘No, no, I’m, yes! I just I think I’m gonna be sick.’ She was overwhelmed.”

Melvin’s co-host, Laura Jarrett, reassured him about the moment, saying, “I think it’s nice to be surprised. There’s so few surprises anymore. Everything is overly scripted and overly done. It’s just nice when you didn’t see the ring, you didn’t know where it was going to be.”

“That’s true. Thanks for making me feel better about it,” he replied, laughing.

Of course, Melvin and Czarniak, 47, ended up tying the knot in a beautiful 2011 wedding in Washington D.C. — the city where they met — at the Church of the Holy City. They share kids Del, 11, and Sybil, 8.

Melvin took over as co-anchor of Today in January after Hoda Kotb exited the NBC morning show.

At the time, the longtime journalist told PEOPLE, “I’m anxious but at the same time, it’s the first time I’ve been this excited about anything outside the day I got married and the birth of my two children. I am beyond stoked.”
